Carbon Metallic pads with Brembos

Drained the SEAT brake fluid and replaced with SuperDot 4 last weekend and put a set of Carbon Metallic pads on (sourced from Badger5) at the same time. Many thanks to Saud for fitting them

Most amusing thing was the bedding in instructions - which talks about what you should do on your 'out lap' and 'in lap'. Basically boils down to drive progressively faster and then slam the anchors on as hard as possible. Saud and I went out to do this and basically got whiplash They're amazing - the pedal feel is great now (back to what it used to be because of the Superdot4) and words can describe the power of these things. The car stops so well now i feel much happier behind the wheel (aside from having to check in the rearview that the driver behind it 1/4 mile away!) as there's basically no fade with repeated braking - it grabs hard every time

Cool
Glad you like em.

The Carvells started using them last year after we had a chat about my experience with them. Work exceeding well (said Mr Kipling)

Love em! First time i've really felt the brembos reach their potential Nice thing is that they're still progressive - i.e. don't snatch all in one go (unless you ask them to!).

I want one!

How easy is it to do the brake fluid... I rekon I can do the pads no problem, but not so sure about the fluid.

After a few recent fade problems I'm probably not going to wait for my pads to wear out completely again before I change them.

I noticed Bill eyeing up my brakes at Combe on Saturday... maybe I should have told him that the pads had done something like 2500 miles by that point...

So Bill, what do you think of the wear rate on the pads?? (and more to the point, how were my discs?)

I can sort your brakes if you are interested It is incredible the difference the pads and SUPER dot 4 make.(Happy Now ) Reckon it took me and Tim 3 hours max to do and most of that time was bleeding the brakes.

Cheers

Does it really make that much difference over the normal Brembo pads?
My Brembos are excellent as it is, but if there is something better then I'd be interested.

Also I don't really understand why people are getting better results with DOT4 over 5.1 as 5.1 is meant to be better isn't it?

How much are the pads?

Cheers
Ben

They must mean Super DOT4. In any case the DOT ratings are minimum levels to achieve that rating so its perfectly feasible for a DOT4 or Super DOT4 to perform better than a just-about-made-it DOT5.1

Best thing to do is look closely at the boiling points.

I'm still incredibly impressed with my Performance Friction Carbon Metallic pads as well! The wear rate would seem to be excellent. I have just come back from Le Mans and spent hundreds of miles in convoy with friends in their Lotus Elise’s going round country roads. Let's just say the driving was "spirited". The pads never faded once and always worked exactly how I wanted them to, best of all they seem to have worn very little (I did 1000 miles country roads this weekend!!).

They still squeal though! I copper greased them all up before I left for Le Mans, made sure everything was back in place properly. That stopped the squealing initially until I got them really hot again and now they squeal. Never mind, I will just put it down to being performance pads

I am yet to change my brake fluid even though I have had the fluid for about 6 months! I was tempted to get the garage to do it when the car goes in for it's 20k service and just ask them to use my Castrol Super Dot 4, but if it is a relatively quick job then I might give it a go with someone’s help. Did you do it round at Saud's place Tim? Any problems?

You did, but bensaud didn't, and since he was the last to post mentioning DOT rating, I guess this is where Ben got confused.

No not really - but we had done it all before. Did (sadly) find a fair bit of air in the system (which can't of being helping) from the last service. Basically removed old pads, wiped discs down with a solvent(?) to remove crap, copper grease on pads, pads on callipers and then bled the whole system. You only need a single (litre) bottle to do it and there's plenty left over when done. Used a gunsons bleeding kit which i bought a wee while back and it runs off tyre pressure.

I was a bit hesitant on bleeding the brakes as I heard about seals reversing etc. I will give it a go next time I have a weekend spare. Bill told me that you can use VAG-COM to pressure bleed them by running something. Anyone know of some step by step instructions on doing this?
