Non Seat Content... Subaru Impreza WRX 300 *now for sale*

Had this about 3 weeks now and i love it

Out the box according to Subaru & Prodrive this has around 260bhp with 260lbsft of torque... this is backed up with an RR printout with 261.7bhp/259.4lbsft.... and Is the quickest car i've driven since owning my stage 1 LCR 3 years ago. Its a bit of a change from the V5......... just as thirsty but packs more of a punch.

Pros

~ 260bhp
~ flat 4 sound
~ sporty bucket seats
~ handling is good, runs quite flat when cornering
~ has 4 doors
~ decent sized boot

Cons

~ 25mpg average over the last 2 tanks
~ has 'ditchfinders' fitted on all corners :headhurt:
~ smaller fuel tank than the V5
~ doesn't have the rumble of the 5 pot
~ not as refined as the V5, but more refined than i was expecting.
~ doesn't have cruise control :(

Haven't got any pics as i don't wanna get :rifle: as the car has hideous 'scooby doo' decals fitted at the moment. Just haven't had time to get the better half's hairdryer out to work its magic and 'de-sticker' it, plus give it a good cleaning session inside, outside and under the bonnet.

here a quick run through of what the WRX 300 is about: http://www.subaru-impreza.org/downloads/impreza-wrx300.pdf/

Current Spec (As of 08/05/14 ) :

Prodrive Engine management system
Prodrive Intercooler 'Y' pipe
3" Decat Exhaust system with 4.5" exit
Cosworth Panel Filter
SWRD 255 fuel pump
Bailey DV10 BOV
MTEC drilled/grooved discs with Mintex fast road pads
STI front strut brace
HKS Type 0 turbo timer
Autogauge boost gauge
Avon ZZ3 tyres

To Do List :

~ ECU tweak by Chris Forbes of Dynatune
~ KYB shocks as one of the rears has started knocking
~ upper rear strut brace and lower 'H' brace
~ whiteline front & rear arbs
~ whiteline front & rear drop links
~ whiteline anti-lift kit
~ Lots of blue samco hosing under the bonnet

And then thrash the hell out of it at a few knockhill trackdays

Do they generally suffer from weak bottom ends? Every one I know with an old scoob has had the big rebuilt or replaced with a stronger unit, saying that they where all running more than standard boost,

One lad was was boasting 450bhp but it needed rebuilding every 5 min

My mate had a p1, spent loads on it ended up 440bhp and 390 lb/ft fastest car I've been in, sound was awesome. But he was always having problems with it, had to replaced bottom end twice, then he rebuild the engine forge piston and rods etc etc. blown the turbo, then it dropped a valve, then it needed a new head. I know it was highly tuned but it was always in the garage being fixed and it cost him loads.

i love imprezas always have since i got a lift in a p1 when they come out.
need to see pics though.
what colour is it?
post some pics im sure there are worse stickered cars on here.

Trust me.... its not pretty looking with the stickers lol.
Think they are ok if you are 5yrs old

Its the same with everything..... start tuning and your hand is never out your pocket. As far as i'm aware, keep the boost below 1.5bar, look after the engine with regular servicing, oil changes etc etc and it'll run forever, this coming from the words of my father-in-law..... a subaru specialist. Working on these is his bread n butter after being a subaru/isuzu technician for 10yrs and then working at Lothian Sports Cars and then Brandon TVR. Hes always worked around 'performance' cars.

I want to keep this below the 300bhp mark so not doing any turbo changes. The 5 speed gearbox doesn't like a lot of power going through it so i want to keep things reliable. With the mods i'm planning, 280-290bhp is achievable, anything more and i need to go to a TD05 turbo or hybrid my TD04 turbo.

P1 engines are known for being like chocolate... trust me i've looked into every avenue as i don't want my hand to never be out my pocket. Any highly tuned car will experiance problems. you only have to look at what happens to the 20VT engine when you try and put over 300lbsft of torque through the rods.
It does help that my father-in-law is a subaru specialist, so its going to get the best of treatment :)

Got to admit..... Looks miles better now the horrible stickers are off.
Took me 2 days to get it all done with the crappy weather we have been having the last few days. Had a bit of residue left over from the stickers so attacked that with some tar remover, then she got a quick polish and wax. Have found areas of paintwork that need attention though, the bonnet and front bumper are covered in chips and scuffs, the side skirts have a few scuffs and the rear bumper looks like its been backed up against a roughcast wall.

Looks loads better now mate [B)]

blimey you were right about the stickers they really were awful looks a really nice car now though.

Tell me about it..... can't for the love of me figure out how anyone would think they even looked good in the first place.

Plans have changed very slightly with regards to things i want to do..... nothing major, but i'll update the "to do list" in the first post in due course.

Was looking at cleaning the intercooler up and spraying the Prodrive logo on as things are a little plain under the bonnet.... clean, but plain. Reckon it would benefit from a couple of wee touches to finish it off. Found a Prodrive paint stencil online which will do the job and is much cheapness :) had thought about making one myself but this saves the hassle.

The other half has been probing me with regards to things that i would like to have do to the car.... have a feeling she is looking for ideas for xmas which i'm not gonna complain about :p

More updates to come soon......................

Small update due soon........... MOT and tax are up at the end of August, so the car will be getting 6 months tax to stagger the MOT/Tax situation.

I know the car will need rear discs and pads as the pads are low and the discs were an advisory last MOT.

So i'll be changing the fronts and rears for drilled & groove discs with black diamond predator fast road pads for some extra stopping power :)

Discs and pads ordered and should hopefully be here the end of the week :D
On another note though...... exhaust has got a blow somewhere :( just so happens there is a guy going into the father-in-laws work to have a full stainless decat system removed from his bugeye as its too quiet for him and hes upgrading to something else louder.

Think its either a japspeed or toyosports system..... its only a few months old and they can be bought new for pretty cheap so hoping i can get it for much cheapness if not free..... just need funds for getting the decat mapped in.

i think for some people its just one of them itches that needs to be scratched.

i never thought i'd own one, always thought it would be too expensive for me to run and always ruled them out because insurance was a killer.

but now i'm 26, my insurance is only £495 :)

I was the same with my Cupra, always wanted one, could never afford one or the insurance, but at 28 with 9 years no claims I can get insured on pretty much anything :D Age has it's perks ;) Nice car, nicer with the removal of those stickers! Nice exhaust sound you got going on there too!

I've got a Walbro 225 fuel pump knocking about somewhere, removed it from my s14a 200sx when I broke it. Drop me a PM if you want it cheap.

Car looks mint btw!

will keep this in mind.

cheers man, looks so much better IMO

Love the sound of these. One of the best sounding cars around tbh.

the sound is something else..... don't think anything else with 4 cylinders can compare.

been messed about with my discs n pads so cancelled the order and went looking for alternatives.

found a new set of MTEC drilled n grooved discs with mintex fast road pads that a guy was selling as he'd sold his WRX before fitting them. Managed to get them for half of what he paid for them, and they are all still in the original packaging.

so looks like another bargain has been found :) they should arrive Thursday / Friday and be fitted for the weekend :D
