Mighty Cordoba people, got one 'ell uv a problem here. My back box and mid silencer have taken a slow 60'000 mile beating and are desperate for a change. I cannot find any systems strictly for the Cordoba, but I have found systems for the Ibiza 2.0 16V and the Mk3 Golf 16V. Will any of these fit?
It looks like I'll be spending something between £250-300 for a system, which I don't think is too bad at all. The Magnex has been the one specified for the cars above so far, but if anyone has any suggestions, I'd be really grateful. This is a plea really since I have a personal need to keep the car in shape. btw, I'll be taking some snaps of the machine today ready for FTPing to my web-site. Details to follow soon. And many thanks for all those that replied to my other message; I'll be posting in there soon. Thanking you in advance, Mark. |

right mate, first of all, have you ever heard of powerflow? they will make a system from scratch for around 325 inc vat and fitting, that includes everything involved from cat back and its stainless and guaranteed for donkies years. Everything from sound to pipe size and number can be sorted out at no extra expense, unless your looking for side exits !!!!
Also try www.sjbsport.com john burton sells a system for the cordy for around 200 squid though not sure what make it is. Ibiza systems will not fit the cordy as the cordy is longer from the rear wheels to the bumper. Also.....Get yer pics up !!!

hehe, cheeky! Here is the link to the pics that you have requested. I know, I've taken too long. Enjoy, and there will be loads more coming to that site too. Keep checking periodically...

Checked out that SJB site and sure enough, around 200 squid you can specify a centre box and single up-swept tailpipe 'n' backbox. Thing is it looks like a cheapy mild steel thing, so I'm going along with LongLife exhausts. £268, life-time-of-the-car guarantee, and made to requirements. I've just got a short journey to Sheffield to get it sorted.
Check LongLife out at:
http://www.exhausts.uk.com/home.cfm
I'll let ya know how I get on. Mad Mark. |

The zorst is on! I've just gone for 2" tubing and a 3" rolled out tail pipe (pics to come on the site shortly) and it's all done in 3 hours, and almost an hour of that was on the phone answering calls!
The welds, tubing and boxes are pretty good quality, and everything is angled and cut to fit, including conical bits for the tail pipe. The only complaint I have with it is that the mid-box is vibrating on left hand corners, and you don't have to corner that hard to get it to touch. This should be easily solved though. I have noticed a little more urgency now that the entire aspiration is free flowing. It's not loud so it doesn't provoke headaches on long journeys, but it's got a nice deep throbby note to it, and at high revs it sings quite nicely! Revs don't drop much faster than they do as standard (governed by the very clever ECU), but they do rise more sharply unloaded and in low gears. And the other day whilst stuck in 40 MPH traffic, the MPG rose above 41! That doesn't happen too often! The next thing I think will be to perform some more major modifications, but this could get expensive. I'm thinking of polishing and porting the head, and then getting a chip to match the new engine characteristics. Anybody been here before? I'm going to leave the standard cams in because I often drive at low revs in traffic, and then take off when it's clear. And one other note: The web-site is going to change because it's going to be advertising my band (Diaboli), but there will be a section called "The Chester Pages" which will still have stuff about the car up there. And if any of you are interested in bikes, my Triumph TT600 (with f***ing loud can!) will be viewable up there too. Have fun, Mark. |

I've had the whole head schamolie done (ooer!)- Inc cams, I would say that you're right about sticking with standard cams unless you use it at high speed a lot, the fast road cams seem to make the car run out of road quickly + the erratic idle can be a pain if you often get caught in traffic.
Try speaking to RPM about flowing your head and stuff - they did a fine job on mine.

If you are considering a flowed head then all I can say is be very careful where you buy them from - I have had heads in the past that look the dogs (all polished etc) but have given no power whatsoever - its the shape of the ports etc that counts not the degree of polish ! Basically its easy to be conned. On my old MGB I had a head from Autosprint in Birmingham that was total shite - no power increase whatsoever. In the end I went to Peter Burgess in Alfreton who prepped heads for 3 MGB's that won the MG owners championships classes that year - he wouldn't take money before he had proved the benefits on the rollers. I would speak to people who race VW's and see who gets their heads done, RPM would be a fair place to start I guess. Dont think I would go to any old 'headshop' and ask them to do it - they may never have done your type of head before.
My car has lots of mods and was originally from Brian Ricketts (started up GTI Engineering and later BRM) - he was an ACE VW tuner but went out of buisness 2 yrs ago - I think due to the ever decreasing market for top engine work with the onset of turbo tuning / chipping. Dont be put off by hotter cams - 260 cams will behave very well even at idle but will give that extra kick at higher rpms. Dont go further than a 268 though. The work on the head would really benefit from cams and would not be that much better with std cams. AMD reckon that Schrick 268's, a decent head and a rechip will give 200bhp from an otherwise std ABF engine (onr that will pass MOT's and not burn up cats) - they are a reputable outfit and could therefore probably guarentee you the power you are paying for - as they have a rolling road they should prove the gains before you pay (ask them to do a before run on your car). AMD are at http://www.auto-amd.com/. Good luck Rob |

somethings going wrong somewhere then, as the best result i've had is 175bhp so far (pre chip) I can't believe a filter + chip are going to boost it to 200bhp - but I'm taking all these rolling road figures with a pinch of salt now.

I would have to agree with you - 200 sounds high to me also but the point I was trying to make was that with an outfit like AMD, i.e one with a rolling road, you should ask for a before power plot and ask them what the conversion will give when they have done it - if they are any good they should be able to tell you - then, if it doesnot make it you dont pay them. I dont believe for a moment it will make 200 bhp, more like 180 like you have got and what I had on my car pre-throttle bodies. When I bought the TB's from Bill B, he said to me ballpark increase of 37 bhp - guess what i got - exactly 37 ! These tuners should be able to tell you the increase expected every time. If not, walk away. Cheers Rob |

Sorry, wasn't poo-pooing your reply! - its a very valid point, there seems to be a lot of figures with no facts being thrown around when it comes to tuning cars at the mo - if you're handing over your hard earned cash, make sure you're getting your money's worth!
