FLooded Diesel

My dad bought a flooded A4 TDI on the cheap... just managed to get all the electrics running, and before trying to turn it over, we managed to get about a gallon of water out of the intercooler.... Should we be worried about turning it over? Or just go for it?

i would be worried

DONT turn it over unless you are SURE the inlet system is dry

diesel + water = BANG

To be honest I'd want the head off too to spray some lube on the bores..no spark plug holes to squirt the wd40 through in a diesel.

Good idea. Injector nozzles / glow plug apertures should do the job though.

There (obviously) wouldn't normally be any water in the intercooler.

I'd remove the injectors / glow plugs (whichever is easiest to get to), spray in some lube, and turn it over (carefully) with them still out (so it can eject any water nice and easily). Don't do a comedy "watching for it coming out" job and lose your eye though.

lol, had the pipe off all night, and ive got all the water out of the intercooler now, head was off and a 'liberal' application of WD40 was added... Turned over twice, on the third attempt caught and started up... followed by about a pint of black water and soot out of the exhaust. Ive left it running for a bit and seems to be good. Need to sort out a few electrical bits, and i think it should be a cracking bargain.

I would, just to be safe... and do the gearbox oil as well...

For the little that it would cost to change the oil, it's not worth the expense of the bigger things going bang!!

May not be coincidence that my 1st Clio's gearbox started giving up the ghost a couple of weeks after I drive it through a flood that required full throttle to keep the car moving at 8mph the water was so deep!! No water in the engine tho... but I had the oil changed shortly afterwards anyway...

We got some bargains there. Was tempted by a TT, but water was a little to high up inside them for my liking. All the cars we bought are working fine. 4 of the 5 diesels bought are now revo'd too! What a fun day out!
Let me know if your planning anymore floods so I can sort some cash out.

All bought by poeple in our family... i had just got my ibiza, and so lost out. My bro got an A4 1.8T quattro 6000 miles on it for £7000 (6 months old), THe sportbacks looked well nice, the cars consisted of whatever was in the dealership when the flood happened. £13,000 Would buy you a new A3 sportback 2.0 diesel, with quite a few bells and whistles. Allo that was needed was to take the carpets and seats out, clean them, cause they stunk... new ECU's for the airbags+electric seats (if it had them) and thats about it. ALthough the dealership either kept or destroyed the replacement keys, so were trying to find some of them for a cheap price.
