So will there be a faster version than the 200Bhp prototype?

I currently drive an 03 plate Cupra R as a company car, and my car is due to be changed in May 2006.

Quite a long way off perhaps, but with the first on the new Leon's supposedly hitting the UK in November this year, will there be an even faster version further down the line?

Not even really thought about what car to have next, but after reading the Autoexpress exclusive drive, they gave it 5 stars and I'm definately growing to like it. The stats are pretty much identical to the current Cupra R (0-60 in 6.9 seconds, Top speed 146Mph) and it has the superior MKIV Golf platform.

I'm just thinking if I get one (And thats a big IF) I might be annoyed that they bring an even faster, sportier one out further down the line. After all, the original Leon Cupra came out about 18 months before the Cupra R.

Chances are the FR version will the 200BHP (equivalent to the Golf GTI) to be followed by a Cupra version, possibly on par with the R32.

Nothing confirmed at the moment though of course, pure speculation.

R32 version will be introduced for sure, but later not at the start of the new Leon.

I'd wait for the faster one..
My wife has the FSi 2.0T engine in her Audi A3 and to be honest although it has a good spread of power I have been dissapointed to find the top end surprisingly flaccid..flaccid even compared to my Leon Cupra TDi with revo.
Of course its about 100kg heavier than my Leon but still dissapointing...It does only have 300 miles on the clock though so should loosen up some more.
What will the new Leon weigh in at?....I think its going to need more than 200bhp to 'feel' quick.

I think the current FSI turbos start to run out of puff after 5k probably due to still being a K03 hopefully they'll introduce a revised K04 at around 250bhp

A mate of mine has done almost 9,000 on his Golf GTI and it has seriously loosened up and feels quick to me. That said, Im a Cupra owner and not such a sporting speedster as your good self!

The prototype weighs in at 1360kg which if i recall is broadly similiar as the LCR (think thats 1376kg) and the LC which is about 1300kg.

Theres a double page spread with the New Leon in 'The Sun' today.

Nothing new in the article though, it doesn't mention anything better than the 2.0T

article in top gear on the new leon. mentions a cupra version with more power than the golf gti, and possibly cheaper.

As you said, I know VW are bring out a 230Bhp GTI lite or something, Do you reckon we will get the same engine output and they will sell it as a Cupra?

After al, the original LCR was only 30Bhp faster than the standard Cupra, but it was the suspension changes that are what make up for the major difference between the two cars IMO.

I want some confirmed details of the diesel version - rumours of the 170 bhp 2.0 TDI have wet my appetite.

Reading Auto Express (i know not the most reliable mag for info) and it reckons the 200bhp Leon will be approx £20k, ie the same price as the Golf GTI. To be fair it would surely be mad to buy the Leon as the Golf will no doubt hold its value much better. Perhaps its just AE getting things all to cock as usual? I certainly hope so!

Im with you Ali, my guestimate (perhaps wishful thinking & also based on no knowledge!) would be that they would surely put it similiar to the latest LCR, say £18- 18.5k as the basic list price with a fair selection of options. To be fair to Auto Express, the £20k price may have included the DSG, which i guess would add £1k to the above price and of course is an additional cost to the base £20k Golf.

You can already see the VW group moving prices more in line with the Golf brand. Take for example the current Leon - cost pricing has roughly remained the same but they have stripped out a lot of the benefits to improve margins (third yr AA cover, CD changer etc).

I think VW will take the opportunity to increase the price of the new Leon although not the same as the Golf.

The Seat used to be good value for money and so be fair, still is although signs are changing...

btw, high end sports models always come after all the base models so expect to see smaller engines followed by the Fr followed by the Cupra.

The LCR was expected to be 19k before it came out.

I paid £16,500 for mine and it was from the first batch in the country.

I would expect the FR version to be around £17k to £18k.

Again - pure speculation. Hopefully we will know more in May.

Looking forward to the official launch in May, perhaps we may have some more concrete info on options, specs, prices etc. Oh and the final look of some more of the models

My dealer told me yesterday, that the news they were hearing was...

250bhp Cupra expected in 18 months time

170bhp is "going to be" in the FR

They also said that the 19" wheels will be staying...

Parts desk then told me not to believe everything Sales say!

From all the bits and pieces I have read over the past few days and weeks, it appears that the prototype will be close to the Cupra version.

In CAR magazine they have a little spread on the Focus ST, Vauxhall VXR, Seat Leon and the Honda Civic. They claim that what we have seen i.e the prototype will be the Cupra.

Again to echo what others have said, it's just a case of wait and see.

After seeing the latest pics that AndyB has posted, the initial rush of the prototpye has ebbed away to an 'oh, thats cack'

All my bits are crossed for the Cupra.
