Side-panelled Subwoofer ala StealthBoxz

I was planning to do a Fibreglass/MDF subbox on the nearside boot wall like the Stealthboxz. Not a lot of room but I am not after earth shaking bass (Been there done that) but would like to fill in the gap that the OE door speakers can't handle.

My previous A4 had a 10 speaker system with a built in 8inch sub on the rear shelf and TBH sounded great to me. i was surprised at how low the sub dropped for an 8.

I want to keep my boot so I was thinking going up to a 10inch woofer max but has anyone had good results from an 8inch which I fear might suit my proposed enclosure size better.

What about something like that? Running with a 10" sub

Thanks! this is precisely what I needed. I have searched extensively for a similar picture based instruction found one but this is much better.

I am tempted to a 10" because heart is saying bigger is better, but my head is saying an 8" would be better suited to such an enclosure? Don't want a large harsh sounding sub.

I would imagine the volume of the box on icecavern is likely to be matched to the chosen sub! If pete is running it then I would imagine a 10" sub is perfectly suited to the enclosure... I dont think he is one for making dodgy installs I think he may have a couple of trophies for his leon install

Of course Pete's a better man than I I simply looked at the size and didn't think it that big.

I've built some bootfilling boxes in the past so I have it ingrained that big box = flatter frequency response.

I'm definately giving this ago though so thanks for the pointer.

Bigger is not always better, it all depends on the size of the magnets and the throw of the woofer.
Smaller woofers are generally better for more punch bass such as dance music. larger ones are generally better for long bass tones like r&b

All depends on what you listen to really.

They look like 12s so I guess you like both!

I've built similar sized enclosures like in your picture (although yours look miles better) because in a sealed enclosure a balanced larger box offers a flatter frequency response. I am a little out of touch with all of this but I have a claim to fame in as much as I came 6th in the Soundoffs back in 1996! Went to the finals and everything. Had a Peugeot 405 in them days with 2 twelves.

I think speaker technology has moved on quite a bit in as much as the roll rubber surrounds of some subs are enormous compared to what I had then. Have you seen the MTX Jackhammer ( 22inch 23 stone.) for example. Bit extreme I know but even smaller subs seem a lot more efficient these days, hence my initial query on an 8inch.

yes mine are 12's. Could have done with bigger magnets but as always money was the issue and i could not afford a bigger amp. They are only 350W rms running off an 1000W 2 channel amp.

Each enclosure need 1cu/f of space so thats all i could fir in my boot. I did toy with the idea of fibreglass but tbh i dont think i would be able to pull it off really.

You might want to look at a jl8 w7. this is an awesome 8" sub but so is the price at 350 smackers.

Good luck and post your progress. I cant wait till i get my ibiza, it will be like having a blank canvass again. Out with the mdf and jigsaw me thinks.

Looks like I've just found my summer project!
How would you go about having a flat face on the fibre glass? So that the sub points straight at the opposite side of the car.

Once you've made the FG mould, you then need to attach it to either an MDF sheet, or as Pete's done, use braces to position the sub-ring, and then use FG fleece to complete the enclosure.

Keep an eye on Pete's thread and I'm sure he'll update it with photo's of the build as he finishes it !!!

I should do a search but where's the best place to buy fibreglass in the quantities needed? Saw some kits in Halfords but the sheets don't look like they would cover very much.
I 'm thinking the boating fraternity could help here?
