Rev Limiter?

Quick question guys... I thought there was a rev limiter at 6,900 RPM on the Cupra 20VT...

My story is as follows:

Driving up some empty dual carriageway last night and eventually come up behind some arse-clown in a 3 litre BMW.

He slows down to around 45 - 50 mph, and every time I pull out to overtake, he puts his foot down too.... Trying to be sensible about this whole situation I just take my foot off the gas at around 80-odd and just pull back in behind him. He then slows down again to 45 - 50 and the whole process starts again.

After this happens 3 or 4 times, I start to get pissed off, and decide "Right, I am going to put it in 3rd - and leave this tit behind".

So, I slam in to 3rd, floor the gas, and take off. I think I kind of took him by surprise, but he still tried to accelerate and keep in front of me. I just keep accelerating, and get in front of him. While concentrating on this, I start thinking to myself "I better change gear soon"... I look at the dials and I am doing 100mph in 3rd, and very slightly OVER 7,000 RPM.

Does my car need checking?

Stevo.

P.S. I did consider slowing down a bit and doing the same to him, but once I beat him and got in front, he just backed right off anyway.

The rev limiter on my car seems to come in at about 7,200 - 7,300rpm. I know when I've been at the track and lost concentration, I've hit the limiter and the needle bounced between about 7,100 and 7,300. You definitely know when you've hit the limiter - you feel and hear a distinct 'wap wap wap wap wap' from the engine.

It's very easy to hit the limiter in 2nd (and still at legal speeds), so just try it out on a clear road. Even if you don't get the limiter to kick in, so long as you back off gently when it tops out in the red (and don't do anything stupid like dip the clutch) you shouldn't have done any real damage to the car.

If you haven't got a limiter - you're a jammy b*st*rd!

Lucky he wasn't trying too hard, it could have been imbarrasing...... 330i's are deceptively quick if driven well....

nah, I could've had him anyway!!! *SMUG* LOL

It was 330Ci (I think). Beaten one on the M49 before and when we kicked off I was a little way behind - you should've seen the shite coming out of his exhaust when he put his foot down too!

Anyway - I sound like a boy racer now, which I'm not really. The arsehole just annoyed me - I'm more worried about whether there's a working rev limiter on my car!!

You definitely know when you've hit the limiter

It's very "soft" compared with other cars I've driven/owned. You REALLY know when you hit it with PSG cars and Scoobies. Rev Counters often over read too; bit like speedos.

You sure it wasn't a 330d, sounds like a diesel if you could see smoke coming out o the exhaust. They are still pretty quick though, I think the 3.0 Diesel they put in the 5 series is about 200bhp don't know if it's the same one they put in the 3 series?

My mate has a 328ci, he drove mine last week and thought it felt quicker than his, and I must admit when I drove his it felt sluggish in comparison, but they are good for about 148mph so I would have theought the new 330ci would have given a 20VT a very good run indeed.

Anyway I have never hit the limiter in my Leon, I must have been close as I guess I've got it to about 6,800rpm. I have to say that they seem to lose power after about 6,200 anyway hence I usually change a bit earlier.

I took a video of my dash yesterday while I was accelerating from about 40mph to 120mph, I have just watched it on my PC and didn't go above 6,500 once. I guess those with chipped Leon's may notice an increase in performance at high revs?

No increase in preformance on higher revs for me (chipped)
there was non before ,i am still changing at around the 6,000
mark.

the chip makes the existing power band felt much stronger
right down from 1,850rpm all the way up but after 5,500 rpm
it feels useless to push it further,i think thats where other
mods come in,fuel regulator plus airfilter and a cat back will
probebly give a better kick at high revs.

E36 M3 puts out about 295hp, 330ci only about 220ish hp

E36 M3 fairly fast but do have very nice top ends

Edit: Oops forgot what the thread was about! In my old Revo'd Cupra I once overtook an Army lorry in 3rd went to slip quickly in to 4th and ended up with second briefly at about 90mph - (yeah I know, I can drive really!) engine didn't cutoff, rev counter went up and stayed at max (didn't make a wap wap wap noise tho - probably would have if I hadn't dipped the clutch quickly - or worse gone pop!) certainly crpped myself about the warranty and exceeding 8k thingy for a while after that!

Mate came round with a chipped 330i. We had a run on our private road and my conclusions;

Revo LCR 265bhp v chipped 250ish bhp 330i

0 to 60 - bmw slightly quicker due to superior traction.

rolling 60 to 120 - could have rammed bmw changing through 3, 4 and 5th.

120 to max - equal all the way to 155.

overall these cars are very well matched. Driver input is what will make the difference.

only ever hit a limiter in first gear on my LCR - can't recall revs but the speedo reads about 42mph

I can always feel when it is time to change up anyway - holding to the red probably makes the car accelerate slower tbh - as the torque has long since dropped off!

On the subject of acceleration - (though no related to the limiter) - why does my car accelerate up hill faster than downhill

sounds about right, some of the 330's ive come across are suprisingly fast, given there meagre output and weight. I know a guy that has got a high miler 330ci manual and he can hang with a friends chipped LCR

A BMW 330ci or BMW 330i sport or SE is 231BHP and 0 - 60 in 6.5 seconds.

I know sad that I know this but I was looking at them before the LCR. It was in the same ball park of having 4 doors and pretty quick.

Be warned but I guess if you have some sort of chip then your laughing.
