Angry HELP! Can't find the engine number for VW Passat

I'm in the process of registering a VW Passat imported from Germany. I have all the required information except the bloomin' engine number. It's not recorded on the CoC and I cannot find it anywhere on the car.

I've spoke to the dealership in Germany and drew a blank there - they don't record it as they don't require it. They suggested removing the top cover and looking on the engine block. The only number there is 038021AA which I think is a part number.

I've tried the local VW dealer, but once they realised it was an import they didn't want to help, only suggesting I look in the service book. Did that, found a label attached to the inside of the front cover quoting a shed load of 3-digit codes which I don't understand.

Can anyone tell me where I can find this damn number? I've given up for today as the local DVLA office closes in an hour, but any guidance would be appreciated.

Cheers,
Gaff.

My engine no was only on my receipt from the dealer - it's not quoted on the COC document.

Have you checked under the rear mat in the boot?
There is usually a sticker with all the codes, including engine, printed there.

regards
Bill

The sticker you've found in the service book will be a build sticker - there's usually a duplicate in the boot somewhere. In addition to all the three character codes you mention (fitted equipment, paint code, fabric patterns etc.), there should be two fairly long codes. From memory these are usually towards the top of the sticker. Of these two codes, one will be the chassis number, the other will be the engine number.

Hope this is of some use/help,

G

Thanks guys, didn't think to look in the boot! Found the sticker in the spare wheel-well and after speaking to VW Customer Care (they were very helpful even though they knew the car was imported) I'm sure I've got the right number.

Just need to join the queue at the DVLA office tomorrow morning...
