A weird spare Key question??

Well its weird for some but not for me, I kitesurf and spend alot of time down at the beach. Now i normally hide my keys somewhere on my car but theres been a few break ins down at my local spot with the theiving gits watching you put your keys away. So im going to have to lock the electronic key in the car and take my spare key with me tied round my kneck or something.

Does the spare key have anything that i could damage inside it by exposing it to salt water, obviously corrosion is on the cards.

Does the alarm activate by locking with the spare?

Could i get a copy of the key cut at seat? i know most normal lock smiths wont copy a car key.

Thanks

Russ

yeah ive seen all of them but none are water tight enough to put the electronic key in and they can easily get damaged by me falling on them.

The easiet option is to tie the spare key to me round my kneck inside my wetsuit i just dont know whats inside the spare key like an immobiliser chip or something?

Dont really want to damage it.

I'm not sure whats in there either mate, just thought of it as an option! You could always tie your keys to your kite, and not dunk it in the water!

I know Skoda do (or did) a rubber 'emergency' key that would suit you down to the ground but don't know if they still do. Might be worth getting your dealer to chase it up, or even pop into a Skoda dealer

All the keys have an immobiliser transponder in them, even the spares. Mine has been in water, snow, mud, ink, just about everything and has always survived. Think the spares are sealed units.

The transponder is mounted in a small glass tube isnt it? The transponder is only needed to start the engine so as long as you lock your 'main' key in the car somwhere it dosnt matter if you bugger the transponder in the spare key as it will open the doors ok with or without transponder.

If the garage a bit unsure (I think its on the Superb ETKA pages) get them to call their dealer support - they definately know about it.

edit - or try Briskoda forums

go to a key cutting shop get a normal key cut with no transponder in, lock your other key in your car and you will still be able to get in your car to it and the key from the key shop will have no electrics in to get broken...

Last time I went in timpsons they had a wall covered in blank car keys. It may be that they don't have the right blank to suit your car. I couldn't see one for the leon but they might have 1 for the ibiza.
