Hot Summers & Traffic Jams - Question for FMIC owners

ok you lot

My FMIC has made an excellent improvement. However....

Recently in the hot weather, when stuck in traffic, I've seen my temp gauge go above the std 90 that it usually sits at, in fact, the dial has gone all the way around another 1/4, so just on the edge of "normal working temps".

Is anyone else experiencing this? I've read a few peeps say it increases slightly over 90, but not as far as mine. Wondering if I've got a fan issue, but usually as soon as it gets quite high in temp the needle drops very quickly back to 90 as i think the big fans come on....

Am I right in thinking theres 2 sets of fans, small and large?

Thanks in advance all

Sounds like the fuse is gone, mine was like that last summer, fine till you got in traffic for about 5-10 mins then would see it creep up, your right there are two fans. I know I haven't got a FMIC but it sounds so similar to mine.

oh bugger

Admittedly I am stuck in very hot weather, in a queue of about 15mins. But looks like I'm going to need to get it looked at.

Why is it that everything I do seems to cause another problem? Just not fair!

Glad my modding "spree" has ended, or is nearing the end anyway.

sorry bill? I havent done anything with the fuses, no.

I got worried when i saw the temps rise on the dash, and if brendy says he's been driving in similar temps and not seeing that kinda reading, I fear that either my fans aren't working or a fuse has gone somewhere.

EDIT: I think I understand what you mean now - no - fuses blowing is the luck of the draw. But for a fuse to blow when I've had a mod. installed just seems weird/coincidence. Thats if it IS a fuse.

I'd have thought I'd notice it before the FMIC, but maybe not.

I've looked at some pictures - I can see 3 fuses on top of the battery. Does anyone know which one the fans use?

i was doing a lot of driving inc start stop traffic, the needle didnt budge (that i noticed) anyway. could be one of a few things
1. your sensor is more sensitive than mine,
2. one or both fans are spinning inefficiently (broken rotors, noise?)
3 fans not coming on at all.
if you fear your fans arnt coming on at all, put a little leccy tape from one of the rotors to the housing, if its spinning, itll pull the tape off, dont use too much tho.l

thanks mate. What fans should I be looking at?

A/some fans must be coming on for the temp gauge to drop so quickly back to 90 - if there are 2 sets of fans where are both located?

just had a look on ETKA and it appears there are 2 fans, side by side. Are these controlled by different fuses?
Which fan is highspeed, and which is low speed?

well i was hoping that someone in the audience might know

I suppose best test for me is to drive somewhere, and leave it idling on the drive, and see what happens. Only seems to happen in traffic though - and don't fancy opening my bonnet then

I'll check all 3 fuses by the battery tomorrow - and so long as these control the fans if ones blown I'll replace it - if not then I'll have to try and replicate the problem on the drive.

On LCR the fans both run either slow or fast depending, lots of peeps have issues with slow circuit on fan failing and then fuse blowing. How to tell open bonnet, start car with aircon off fans should be off, then turn on aircon (*) symbol fans should come on at slow speed, if they pulse on/off at high then circuit in fan is knackered, time for new fans or look on ukmkiv for resistor fix! This of coures may all be crap on LC but its same on glofs! Good luck!

right, so aircon off fans will be off.

Aircon on fans should come on at slow speed. If they don't - either fan is knackered or fuse blown.

Right, think i understand. thanks. I'll check fuses and try that tomorrow.

ws'nt saying you had messed with fuses... but I think you got what I meant in the end.

fuses blowing and SEATs is more common than you would think... see the ibiza section for same thing but resulting FIRE
