I drove an S2000 this weekend
My neighbour was kind enough to let me take his S2000 out for a spin this weekend, just thought I would give a quick review of it.
First impressions were 'what an excellent driving position'. You really do feel like you are part of the car, everything nice an close to hand and almost like sitting in a single seater forumla ford ! Engine start button is a nice touch. I started to reverse it out of the driveway and promptly stalled it There is no torque at all at low revs so you have to be very careful with the clutch (which is a lot more racy than the LCRs). The gear change is amazing, a very short throw - maybe I will have to get a short shift for the LCR.On the move it is actually a lot more relaxed than I thought it would be, and despite the lack of torque it is very easy to drive around town. Anyway, we headed for a local NSL section of road and my neighbour suggested that I 'go for it'. Driving a car with a 9000 red line is interesting I expected to get some sort of kick from the VTEC, but I never noticed it and we hit 9k in both 2nd and 3rd gear. It certainly shifts, but it doesn't feel as quick as the LCR even with the roof down. I know that it is quicker (we have been out driving together), but I was expecting it to feel much faster. The handling is amazing, the steering and suspension are very nice. Having the front wheels only do the steering gives you a much sharper and livelier ride. Anyway, we returned to base and I handed over my keys to see what my neighbour made of the R. He used to have a Golf Mk4 Turbo so he was expecting a similar experience to that - however he was very impressed with the R and commented on how nice it was to have turbo power ![]() If I only needed a car for myself, the S2000 would be on my list - but at the same time I really do think I would miss the torque of the 20vt. For that reason, I think something TVR ish might be more to my tastes. Bob |

Aparently the Vtec is softer in them compared to the CTR... Glad you liked it... I couldn't get in one, it all felt a bit too enclosed for me..

the newer i-VTEC is a lot smoother than the old version.
Get him to take you out for a drive in the wet, the S2000 is serious 'fun' then

It feels much faster from the passenger seat. In the wet the VTEC kick is much more noticable - especially when it cause you to break traction Bob |

I'm not so sure that it's faster than a Revo'd LCR. My boss commented that he couldn't keep up with my LCR during a long 'spirited' drive along country roads between Cranliegh and Guildford, I was in his standard LCR, he was in his S200.
Before anyone says he wasn't trying, I can assure you he was (the guy is super-competitive), and I rate him as a very skilled driver; he has done lots of track days in Scoobies and he has done 56 second laps of Brands indie circuit on his 996SP. The only times he was quicker than me was off the line and in a couple of fast (100+) sweepers, the rest of the time I was pulling away from him. He loves his S2000, however he was so impressed with the LCR that he is thinking about getting one (maybe buying mine). |

I'd wager that an S2000, in the hands of the same driver would be faster round a track than a chipped LCR. Of course 6 pages of replies will now follow about torque, beating M3's, rolling starts, straight lines and a mountain of other tripe. |

There isn't much between the two cars (standard LCR and S2000) out on the road - the S2000 is very slightly quicker. Revo'd I would say the LCR will keep up on the straights without too much difficulty, but handling wise the S2000 will eat it for breakfast, lunch and dinner when it comes to some bends.
They are two very different cars, built for two very different things so there is no surprise that each of them has things they are good and bad at. Bob |

I don't feel the need race cars on the road, and I don't care if my car is faster or slower than any other car. On this occasion I was just having some fun with another driver that I respected. I'm sure that his S2000 would be quicker on a fast, smooth circuit, however I use mine LCR as a road car and I'm sure that a chipped LCR is quicker on pot-holed country roads, I know Honda's are normally set up for smooth roads . I don't know about the state of the roads near you, but in Surrey roads don't resemble any smooth race circuit that I've ever visited. |
