Assistance, or direction!

I can't decide what I want car wise & would value some pointers, or other options...

I like the Ibiza 2.0 8v - but the boot is a little small, but I like the torque.
I like the Cordoba SX Coupe 1.9TDi, massive boot, hard to come by, torque good, needs chipping.
I like the Cordoba Saloon 1.9TDi, same as above, but has 4 doors.
I like the Pug 306 cos it handles better than any of the above and has a decent boot - engine wise, need to research.

What else is there?

Mark

did you miss the 'torque' bit

I drove the Cordie Scotty bought 18months ago & whilst I liked ragging it to get it to move, I couldn't do that everyday I think..

Sorry,missed that bit

without finance, 4-7k don't really wanna exceed that (don't think I'd get anything PX, so that's not a consideration)

Fiat Punto GT, possibly a bit knackered by now. I had a 1.2 which was good but not driven any of their others.

306s are a bit peaky like the beeza 16v, or you could get the TDI.

Nissan 200sx could be had for this money, but a very different drive from hot hatch type cars, or maybe a Sunny GTI or GTIR.

To be honest, I can't think of much else. When I got my 16V I discarded Punto GT and 306 XSI/GTI.

Alfa Romeo GTV is down in that price bracket now.
A '96 P with only 50K on the clock will set you back 6-7K.
Very nice looking car, and the handling is meant to be extremely good for FWD.

Lancia Delta Integrale - can pick up a good Evo on a J plate with 60K on the clock for the sort of money you're looking at.

Rover 200Vi
(Stop sniggering!)
We're talking about a car capable of 0-60 in 7.9 that can be picked up on a V or W plate for under 6.5K. 1.8VVC lump is straight out of the MGF, and is very tuneable. Just ask Richardsons or Moto-Build what you can get out of one with a bit of tinkering.
A search of Rover's own stock shows a '98 S for just 5K with only 17K on the clock!

Just a few more for you to consider.

Oh, and ask Neil (TDi 110) about Nissan Primera GTs.

Phill

Agree with the Rover, wouldn't go near the Lancia unless it was as a second car or you got an absolute stunner. It is a stunning car to drive and own but if you're used to VW-esque reliability (or any relaibility) then this definitely ain't for you. A friend of mine got his for nothing as a present from his brother who owned it for a few years, on a J or H plate. Don't get me wrong brilliant fun but it was less relaible than his previous D plate Alfa 33 (or was it a 75?) which only cost £450!!

If you like that sort of thing Alfa hatches are fun and easier to fix as things go wrong - good engines.

Corrado/Golf

What about Golf VR6 or a Corrado. Leggy but they can take the miles.

I think we may have made thing worse for MarkP.

It looks like he had it down to three or so cars.

And look what we have come with

Hee hee

Erh, hope this helps in narrowing your choice Mark.

Alfa's are a good buy, the 156 is a great handler and can be picked up cheap as chips now, but dont know how alfas take mileage like yours.

The 8V seems to be the best option so far, small boot yes, you have kids, no

Golf is a bigger car, and needs work to handle well, mk3 8v is slow but plentiful, 16v, peakey and hard to find. Corrado a great car, very small inside (i couldnt fit in one)

Theres always the jap route, FTO's are quick but small, Impreza's are strong, but imports mean high insurance and likely to be battered in this price range, early EVO (2/3)???
Plus, fuel economy is a no no, and well, they are plastic.

Something different, mk2 rallye, lhd yes, great handlers and cheap, just keep the s'charger in order.

Audi A4's are about, high (ish) miles, keep em serviced and they go on and on. Have seen low mileage S2 coupes around that price too.

BMW anyone??? thought not, 318ti compacts are tuneable and cheap 2nd hand.

Mondeo ST24, i know its a ford, but great engine and big, same goes for the Vectra GSI (you can join phill then too)

Ill keep thinking

There's plenty to go at although I would assume insurance would be quite a major factor, if not you could buy something silly like an old celica gt4 or imprezza turbo or a skyline 2.5 gts!

If you're going for a hatch and a slightly more insurance friendly one then (as you well know) it's best to get out there and test them. I had my choices into single figures before I went testing, including 306xsi, bravohgt, bmw compact, saxo (sorry, it didn't look bad for the money!)etc. After testing it came down to either the 8v (which obviously I got) a 1.7 puma (great drive but a bit girly) and the fiesta zetec s (the biggest suprise of all, very nice handling off the shelf!). Most of the others I had considered were either crap or very difficult to find in good nick.

If I was changing now I wouldn't consider any of those I did a year back, I'd look for bigger and better things (bigger as in more power!)

As Saul will tell you we spent a rather hungover sunday flicking through the lastest autotrader and drooling over what we could have and suprising ourselves with what we could afford if only it was insurable! Give it a go if you've not been already.

Good luck with it

A few questions for ya Mark:

1. Are you looking for zippy performance, high top speed, or small engine/fuel economy? From suggesting the Cordy TDi, I'd think you'd want fuel economy.

2. 3/5 door? Hatch/saloon/coupe?

3. What do you do with it? Do you lug loads of gear around (like me with my bass guitar equipment), or quite often got people in the back?

4. Setup - Comfort/less comfort/sporty/rally car?

5. Preferred manufacturers? (Seat goes without saying!)

You told me to keep my Cordy SX. How about joining the club?!!

Subaru Impreza 2.0 Sport

Wonderful handling, decent performance, great reliability...

Most Impreza Turbos at this kind of money will be very high milers, or shagged or both.

You heard the man, and its got as much torque down low as the majority of other cars out there, more in a load of cases,
dont forget, just because theres the rush at 4k rpm doesnt mean theres nothing below it, i can happily tootle round town changing gear at 3k rpm and still be up anyones arse!! (not literally!!)

Some good ones there - all been along the train of thought line

What I need...

Well, Like my beeza, it needs to be smallish, but with luggage space - I do tend to fill the boot up on the Ibiza easily.

TDi SX would be nice. but rare.

Fuel economy can't be stupid, tolerable is fine (damn, not TVR then)

Body style isn't a problem either

Insurance isn't a HUGE issue, good postcode, no accidents at fault, lots of NCB & no points = scooby insurance is sub £850 (less than a 20VT Ibiza) - I pay £264 for the Ibiza at the moment.

I basically want a nice comfy car, out the box, that handles, stops as it should - I will have a 'fun' car as well. A 306 is very close to meeting this. then they do dumb things like hang spare wheels under the boot.

For sense's sake RWD is out (some of you have seen me drive)

Cheers

Mark

Are you considering getting rid of your Ibiza?
I know someone who is after an Ibiza shell for a Rally car build.
(no sunroof right?)

Could you let me know?
cheers
