TDI preference

Well I have driven a LCR 225 an Audi S3 225 and owned a TT 225 Quattro and to be honest, as much as I had a lot of fun with all of them, I prefer my TDI FR 06... I know that you can have more fun with a petrol, but the aggressive attitude of the 170 TDI is shocking and can have its advantages.

I have drawn up pros and cons for the Mk1 LCR and the Mk2 FR TDI

1. LCR is quicker to 60, but the FR TDI 2 is only a whisker behind when driven right
2. The FR TDI 2 has better mid range in gear acceleration, however the LCR with the revs high can just match it.
3. The FR TDI 2 returns the lowest of 33-36 when being pushed about, with the potentiol of 52mpg on the run, I won't go into the LCR economy.
4. The TDI maintenance plan is simpler and not that much more expensive, with less moving parts.
5. The LCR MK1 looks meaner, but the FR mk2 looks more modern
6. Cheaper tax and insurance on the FR TDI 2

So hope that helps...

This is a comparison i've always pondered over. As i have never driven an LCR but was going to buy on instead of my FR TDi. But unless i drive an LCR, theres no proper way to compare. So if its performance you are wanting to compare, best bet is a test drive one as fuel Economy/Service costs/Tax etc can all be compared on paper

i've had a remapped lcr and now got a FR TDI on order..
obviously less revs acceleration, but the FR TDI felt great to drive with the same torgue basically. .i have never like diesels until i drove the FR 170.....gotta wait only a few more weeks now :)

You shouldnt really compare 225bhp petrols to 170bhp diesels;)

1. 0-62mph in 6.8 vs 8.3....Quite a difference;) 150mph vs 135mph

2. Mid range in gear acceleration between diesel and petrol is mis leading as both are done in 4th gear, petrol should be in 3rd for comparisons. When on boost in petrol in 4th gear vs 4th gear in the TDI the petrol is going to perform better.
Do a 50-100 in 4th gear in the TDI and then do the same in LCR, there will be a hell of a difference ;)

No point comparing diesel vs turbo performance:)

Your right though on the rest reference running costs:)

When I had the lcr remapped I could just hit 90mph in 3rd from 30mph..it was a complete beast…but the mpg wasn’t great :( ….i agree very difficult to compare and especially as my lcr was over 250+bhp :)
However I liked the fact that when it comes down to everyday driving / overtaking the FR TDI appeared to have great acceleration when I test drove one prior to order....If I remember correctly the FRTDI torque is greater than the old standard lcr and was similar to my old remapped lcr…not that I’m trying to compare :) ….i guess this is why I felt it was quick enough..craigomills

Kinda reminds me of a post R32 v PD15O (Remapped) :cartman:

Actually between my TT and PD150 Revo there wasn't much in it. Guess the 4WD adds a slight weight disadvantage.

I have one of those speed test bits of road where I come off a roundabout and try to hit a certain speed before a fixed point. Weirdly the PD150R, TT and PD170 are all too close to call. Saying that my mate with a 53 plate STi hits about the same...

We have the same sort of thing where i live Andy. My GTi-6 would hit 118mph with just me in the car. A friend of a friend could do 125 in his M3 Evo. You need ALOT of power to make the smallest difference, so i've found. A Standard VTR could also get 112mph =/ (This was a private road) Haven't tried the FR yet as i dont want to drive it too hard till 1k

Yeah you must need a big power difference to get anywhere different. Especially as there is 95bhp between my Leon and my mates Scoob.

I'm sure you will tbh. I miss my GTi-6 even though i spent so much money repairing it all the time, was **** on fuel, didnt go into gear too easy sometimes and had to clean it everyday! (It was Black). But i dont regret getting my FR a tiny bit. In every field it ticks the box, cant put one thing down on it (Yet). Averaged 46.9 mpg on my trip home from work today, with a couple quick blasts, so smooth to drive, looks great, goes great, and only just reached 500 miles on the clock! Only had to refuel once since 0 Miles, which was today. Your favourite cars you will always miss for a bit no matter which car you move onto, but the Mk2 Leon is a really sound investment, especially the Diesel.

I think overall you wont be dissapointed, sligtly different driving style required (shorter revs) but you'll get used to it I am sure.

Dont see a problem comparing Petrol's and Diesels nowadays, afterall you do find people comparing the two when looking to buy now.

My previous car was a Focus ST225, moved on to the Leon FR TDI 170 and have never looked back.

Bit slow of the mark in 1st, but once ya get the baby moving the torque comes flooding through and I have to say the acceleration in 3rd gear is not far short of the focus.

Big bonus is, I can drive the Leon as hard as the Focus, but get twice the economy and don't lose any of the enjoyment!!

Can't belive I'm sayin it, but i'm a full TDI convert!!

You won't be disappointed.

This is a personal point of view but when driving on the french A roads 4th was a great gear to arrive up to a lorry and have the pace to follow through, sometimes overtaking as many as a dozen at a time. Brillent holiday. Only worry was if you get caught doing over 50km over the speed limit bye bye car :(.
