Air Con Advice Please

Hi everyone, my first post so treat me gently please.;)

I'm actually trying to access your expertise on behalf of my daughter who lives in Eire.

She has a 2000 Tdi with manual air con (& with about 80,000 miles) with a faulty air con/fan selector switch. The indicator light in the centre of the switch has apparently never worked (the car was acquired with about 30,000 miles) while the fan selector will only operate at speed three

She will live without the light (unless this reflects a major problem :( ) but prefers not to have a high octane icy blast when trying to defrost on a winter morning.

Is it naive to suppose that changing the switch (is that possible?) will restore variable fan speed again or are we facing something a bit more complicated (and costly)

Your learned comments and guidance will be much appreciated.

Thanks
Wodge:)

The problem could lie with the resistor unit which basically controls the voltage to the fan. Im not sure where it is exactly but should be close to the fan itself.

resistor pack located to the right of the fan behind the lower glove box, as for the high octane icy blast! wouldnt think that the ac is working as it needs the fan to be operational! once the fan is fully operation I would think the ac on indicator in the switch will illuminate! and turn the heat up! the ac will still work if you set the the heater to hot, that way you get the added bonus of dehumidified air which speeds up the demisting process :)
