Sidelights and DRL's

Hi guys,

Just thought I would ask a couple of quick questions regarding the DRLs and sidelights on the Leon mk3.

When DRLs are activated they are at full brightness? Is this correct I have also activated the rear DRLs too to work in line with the fronts. When the headlights are on the DRLs dim slightly?

However when I activate the sidelights manually they are exactly the same as the DRLs, they do not dim at all. Should they dim to the same brightness as if the headlights were on? I am slightly confused in the point in sidelights if they serve the same purpose as the DRLs? Obviously they would usually switch on the rear lights and number plate lights but I have that already activated? Any ideas guys?

Cheers

I think so but not really sure the exact dimness as I'm always in my car when the headlights are on. I never use my sidelights as I don't see the point. I only used them once so I could get a photo at night without dazzling the camera

Thanks mate! My worry is that either mine are always dimmed, but they do dim when headlights are on. Or they are not dimming when sidelights are on?

Here is a picture of it with the DRLs on, do they look like they are at full brightness mate?

Thanks mate!

Just another quick one btw mate, what build is your Leon? Is in an MY16 model?

As years go on it looks like they keep changing things? Does your dash light up with sidelights or not? And also do your DRLs dim when in the sidelight mode when indicating.

It's a MY14 model I think, I know it was registered Jan 2014.

Not sure about the dash with sidelights as I don't use them.
But yes the DRL's do dim during indicating as its to stop dazzling other drivers. I believe all cars fitted with led drl's dim whilst indicating

A small point, but the DRL dims with the indicator so it doesn't 'mask' the indicator, if it was to do with dazzling other drivers then they would be dazzled most of the time!!!
Anyway, I was just going to add that my DRL's don't dim when used as side lights, but that maybe due to vcds coding that I had done (rear lights on with DRL's). I'm sure they used to before vcds tweaking.

I have done the same VCDS coding too. Rear DRLs on all the time.

However there was another guy on here, his did not dim either. I think it may be something to do with the MY16 models, is yours MY16?

My main concern was that my DRLs were not at full brightness as they are the same as the sidelights however I now think that it may be because the sidelights don't dim?

The DRLs dim with indicators etc and I am guessing this is the brightness the side lights previously dimmed? (As if indicating)

That's what I meant. Lol

My rear lights are also been coded to act as DRL's.

Another note, I think there's somewhere on VCDS where you can change the brightness of the DRL's

I activated the rear lights to come on with the DRLs using VCDS, my instrument lights and switches also are illuminated at the same time, this all comes to life after moving the ignition key from the insert/remove position.

If I switch the side lights on using the light switch the front ones do indeed dim but the instrument and switch illumination stays on, this I presume is because I'd activated the rear lights thro' VCDs.

I note on the notes for OBD eleven app that it mentions that is possible to increase the level of light output of the DRLs from the factory setting of 100 up to a max of 127.

The way I understand it there is two ways to code rear Drl's

1.
select STG 09 (vehicle power)
STG Access Permission -> Function 16
Enter access code 31347
STG adjustment -> function 10
Channel (6) - Daytime Running Lights - daytime running lights additionally activated Select standlight
put emphasis on active

2
select STG 09 (vehicle power)
STG Access Permission -> Function 16
Enter access code 31347
STG adjustment -> function 10
Select Leuchte23SL HLC10 light function D23 - channel (9)
put emphasis on daytime running lights

Select Leuchte24SL HRA65 light function D24 - channel (9)
put emphasis on daytime running lights
Select Leuchte26NSL LA72 Light Function D26 - channel (9)
put emphasis on daytime running lights

Select Leuchte27NSL RC6 light function D27 - channel (9)
put emphasis on daytime running lights

I've done it both ways
Number 1 as far as I can see just turns on the sidelights as dash lights light switch and number plate lights are on when the ignition is turned on and on my old MY14 mk3 the drls were dimmer

Number 2 does just turn the rear lights on no dash lights, switch or number plate lights, just done this on my new MY16 and the drls are as in the pic above bright

this puts the outer rear lights as DRL's which also dim down when you indicate

also the inner tail lights come on when I brake!

Hmm, this is interesting, could you post short video how it actually looks like in action?
