Inlet manifold cleaning... (internally)

yes you do it the same way as you did with the fiat, and it should cough smoke from the exhaust when you done it.

take off the intercooler pipe from throttle
spray carb cleaner in it
either brush with a tooth brush or leave it if you don;t want to brush
collect excessive carb cleaner which might drip
put pipe back on

now here is where the catch is:

throttle can only be properly realigned with vagcom

others say that you can disconnect battery, leave it for 5 minutes, put it back, turn ignition (don;t run engine) and wait till the squeeking sound ends. THis is not the case though. Only possible with vagcom.

anyway, if you don't touch the butterfly thing in the throttle and simply spray the carb cleaner will get everywhere on its own.

Lastly, run car with slightly revving it.

yes its no problem keeping the inlet attached to the block. If you have full vagcom then yes, you can open the butterfly however you want, and scrub it with a brush (that would be the most thorough way)

Turn the key on but do not start the car.

[Select]
[01 - Engine]
[Measuring Blocks - 08]
Group 060
[Go!]
[Switch to basic settings]
Once you do this you will see the top right display say ADP RUN. The TB adaptation is being done as soon as you switch to basic settings. You will see the values change and hear the TB cycle for the first few seconds then it will stop. Leave it in Basic Settings for about 30 seconds.
[Switch to Meas. Blocks] button and you're all set.

Be sure not to touch the accelerator and make sure the engine is NOT running when you do this!

I suspect you risk more than you will ever fix from this personally.
just how dirty do you think the inside is, and what effect do you think it actually makes to engine running?

maybe its good to say that I have never done this myself...

however I have read quite a few posts on here where people claim good results from this. ie better idling and some who claim power comes smoother throughout revs.

even read somewhere that some English 'Tuning' (hate that word) company you lads refer to quite often, said to do it every 10 K

but don't know this first hand

More than cleaning the tb or inlet mani i would say more of a clean of the injectors and spark plugs would have more of an effect on the efficency of the engine running...

I must admit I was shocked at how dirty the inlet system was on mine (1.4 common problem though) but the inlet manifold looks imposable to clean inside, I cleaned the throttle body and the results was impressive with cold start and general running much improved Btw I use brake cleaner as it seems better at removing carbon deposits/

the op is saying cleaning the inside of the inlet mani..
clean throttle body, yep, there's a benefit if its gooped up.. but the inlet manifold?

reseal gasket for sure..
