compressing

I'm changing the rear brakes pads a Leon 1.9TDI. Having removed the caliper and old pads I can't compress the piston back into the caliper to put he new pads in. Infact I can't even fit the the old pads in as it appears the piston is fully extended. Can anyone sudggest what is stopping...
