1.6tdi flashing coil lamp, engine warning lamp & error code P2454

Hi all,

I'm having a fault occuring with my 1.6tdi ibiza...
The glow plug light is flashing (not all the time) but only turns off when the engine is turned off..
The EML is now lit ( this is easily cleared with an OBD reader )
The obd reader shows error P2454 'Diesel Particulate Filter Differential Pressure Sensor circuit low'.

I have had a look at the pressure sensor & it seems to be ok, no sign of scorching from exhaust heat. Are these prone to fail... or is it just a sign of another problem i.e. the dpf?

I understand the pressure sensor measures the soot content of the dpf by measuring air pressure before and after the dpf.. but on my car only one of the tubes is connected.. the other is fitted with a short pipe to nothing?
The reason I mention this, is because I have read somewhere that the pressure sensor needs to be reset with vcds before it's first use - but I'm puzzled when one of the pressure pipes is open to the atmosphere..

Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

John

Not sure on the exact error code but my DPF pressure sensor failed with loads of lights on dash as well.

Not sure why tube is not connected should be either side of DPF to measure before and after pressure, that could be the issue right there. The sensor should be right at the bottom of the bulkhead on passenger side.

Hi Big Dogg, thanks for the support on this :)

It gives me hope that the DPF hasn't failed yet...
I've had a look at a few sensors on ebay (exact same part number) some of which are used with the pipes still attached - and they have a short pipe to the atmosphere too - maybe some sort of mod introduced in 2011?
I have just ordered one of those sensors, best to start with the easy cheap things first before I start worrying about the expensive / difficult jobs....

Hi John

I just wondered if you actually fixed your car by replacing the dpf differential pressure sensor.

I have a Seat Ibiza 2010. Ive had the curly wire light flashing on my car a few times in the past. It has always cleared by stopping the engine and restarting but last night the engine management light came on as well. I had no option but to carry on driving as I was coming around the M25/M23 at the time. The car got me home ok and didnt feel any different to drive.

I downloaded the codes this morning and had P2454 and a pending code P2453. Searching the internet it seems to point to the differential pressure sensor. Its in an awkward position (surprise surprise) but I managed to undo the nut and pull the electrical connector off without damaging it. I gave it a spray with contractor spray and went for a short drive.

No more warning lights or fault codes (yet) but I have ordered a new sensor (from ebay) just in case it happens again. If it does Ill jack the car up and check the hoses at the exhaust end but I just wondered if changing the sensor worked for you. Did you have to do any sort of calibration? Some people say theres no need, others say turning the ignition on for 10 seconds then off for 10 seconds and repeating a few times does this.??

Additionally, have Seat been in touch yet about the emissions scandal thing yet and if they have, have you had any modifications done.? They have written to me a few times but no work has been done. I just wondered if these sensors becoming faulty might be something to do with it.

This dpf-differential-pressure-sensor is fitted to my Seat Ibiza 16 TDI 2010

VW AG DPS10

I think it might have become faulty as I am getting the curly wire light flashing every now and again.
I think its getting worse cos last night the engine management light came on as well for the first time and I got fault code P2454 and pending code P2453 . Googling it, it seems to point to this sensor. Hope Im right cos I just ordered one.! lol

Hi Dave,

Thanks for the reminder, I should have posted a followup weeks ago.. ;)

Changing the dps has worked a treat! There are no more flashing glow plug lights, the EML hasn't lit either. The car is noticeably perkier than before, and it isn't 're-genning' as often !
In fact it is driving like a new car again :)

I didn't want to post a reply straight away in order to give me a chance to evaluate if the new dps was the culprit.

There was no need to calibrate, as on the Ibiza there is only one pipe connected - i.e. it always compares the pre-DPF pressure to the atmosphere. On the BriSkoda site which states to calibrate, it seems their dps is connected with both pipes to the pre/post DPF, though I don't know why there should be a difference.

Before the fix, the glow plug warning was occurring more and more often, and I would often notice tremendous heat from the engine when I stopped (I think it was trying to re-gen almost constantly)
Once I fitted the replacement module, I went for a steady cruise down the M1, and it has been right as rain ever since.

I haven't been contacted by Seat yet, but I haven't owned the Ibiza for that long. Not sure if I want to take it in to be fixed, though VW say some of the rework can in fact improve economy - it needs to, my seat is quite thirsty for a 1.6 tdi...

Regards,

John

Thanks for your reply

That is odd cos I jacked mine up yesterday evening and there are deffo 2 pipes connected on mine. No damage to the pipes though but Ill check to see if there is a blockage when I change the sensor.

Ive decided to add some cleaner to the fuel tank and change the sensor. Ive ordered an air filter too cos it is quite dirty. Just got to wait for it all to come now. Only spent about £60 so far which is OK. A garage would have charged more than that to just download the codes and turn the management light off and tell me to wait and see if it happens again.!

Success (I hope) sensor changed. air filter changed, just did about 60 miles maintaining 2000 revs most of the time. No flashing curly wire light. no engine management light. no stored or pending fault codes. Ive ordered some DPF cleaner to add to the fuel tank so Ill put some in when it comes but touch wood, i think its fixed. back up to 56mpg !!

Hi Dave,

Is all still well? I've had no problems at all since the sensor was changed :)

Touch wood, so far so good. I dont drive the car much as I work for the railway so get free travel but theres been no warning lights so far. I changed the sensor, air filter, oil, oil filter. Cleared all faults on the ECU and took the car for a decent hour long drive on the motorway, keeping it in 4th to maintain 2000-2500rpm. Its like it was when I brought it again now. Still no word from Seat about what they are gonna do about the emissions scandal thing.I had one letter about September last year confirming my car is effected. A second letter early this year saying that have decided on a course of action but nothing since. I wouldnt be surprised if they are just leaving it as long as they can now so that each month that goes by, theres less and less effected cars left on the road. !!
