I have previously owned a couple of fr 170s but due to my gf passing her test need something cheaper to run, insure. I have seen a 63 1.6tdi but it's done 73k.
Looking for some opinions, thoughts on this car it's reasonably priced Aswell hence why I'm going for a look.

Hi
The things things we do for love! However I would look for a 1.2 or 1.4 tsi. 1.6 is slow lots of bits with start to go wrong at that age (egr/dpf etc) just look on Honest John's website. And also they only have a 5 speed gearbox.

I have been thinking about a tsi Aswell but have also heard they have their own problems. I have a local VAG specialist who was going to do a dpf egr delete and remap. I'll have a look at the tsi though.

Don't be buying a diesel and then having the DPF removed, not only is it illegal, it is morally objectionable as well - https://www.theguardian.com/environ...emoval-air-pollution-department-for-transport -

If you do less than 15k - 20k a year then there is no point in buying a diesel, just get a petrol.
I think the issues with the 1.4's were mostly just the silly twin charged ones, which VAG have stopped making and they never used in the MK3 Leon.

I don't find my 1.6 slow and it has way more torque than a 1.2 TSi, so probably faster in the real world (unless your real world is a standing start race at the lights). I have not driven a 1.2 so cannot state that categorically though.

If the car is used for short journeys I can see that DPFs etc might become a problem, but in that case the advice would be to get a petrol anyway. Diesels excel on longer runs and light throttle openings, which makes them unsuitable for the urban environment. If doing a decent length commute (10 or miles) on open roads a diesel would be a good choice.

I went to look at the mk3 but decided the mileage was just too much and wasn't worth the hassle. I eventually got a nice mk2 Copa SE tdi with 28k I do a daily 40 miles on the motorway so the dpf shouldn't be a major problem.
