2004 Diesel Cupra miss-firing, shuddering, blowing smoke and loss of power

I have a 2004 1.9 150hp Diesel Cupra.

Recently it has started to struggle. Its not consistently doing this but it will have loss of power, shuddering on acceleration and has started blowing smoke with acceleration too. No fault codes other than a glow plug relay issue which it's always had. Weirdly it will do this, sometimes shuddering at low speed then 10 minutes later will be running and pulling fine. Anyone had similar issues. Debating wether to delve into the problem or not, cars done 100k, shes a little dinged up so deciding wether to spend money or sell up. Egr was checked and is fine. Mechanic mentioned possible injectors? cam shaft?

lancashire.
sounds electrical as its intermittent Did the Mechanic check the Maf? as that's a common fault as that monitors airflow and when's last you changed the air filter , also putting a good fuel system cleaner would be worth a go and giving the car a good run also short journeys don't help one bit , i do this myself but make sure car has a good run now and again, if you had a cam shaft issue you'd here the knocking and even burn allot of oil.

Cheapest thing to do first is just to make sure there aren't any boost leaks. Shuddering on acceleration could be that one of the pipes close to the turbo is starting to give up.

No harm in making sure the EGR is clean, maybe give the MAF a clean if you can and check the MAP isn't coated in oil. Vacuum lines could be perishing if they're originals.

After that, it might be time to take the rocker cover off. Injector looms can fail because the wires are exposed to heat and oil. You can get them out more easily and test them with a multimeter for continuity and resistance - well, more easily than trying to get the camshaft out - and replacements are cheaper.

Cam is my main worry at the moment too - I had some metal filings on my magnetic sump plug on the last oil change and there aren't many other places it's likely to have come from.

Injector loom breaking down under the valve cover? Air bubbles in fuel lines? Restriction in fuel tank pump?
