7DSG on MY19 Cupra post first service

Has anyone else completed their first service on an MY19 7Sp DSG?

Mine has been serviced recently; whilst the DSG gear change is now even smoother than before, it also appears to have lost some of the emotion/rawness that made it a Cupra. The throttle blips in auto and manual downshifts are now virtually non-existent, and just feels like a standard car as opposed to a performance model.

This is my first DSG so not too sure if the post service smoothness is just the equivalent of the manual cables being reset?

Mines not been serviced yet but do you mean in Sport and Cupra mode as well?

All modes. Not too sure if the mechatronic unit has been reflashed. I completed a VCDS scan before it went in for the service and the only fault visable was with the rear camera, which occasionally does not show when reverse was selected.

That's a worry as I like the more aggressive way it shifts in those modes. You going to go back to the dealer and challenge it?

I wanted to canvass opinion on here first. My Cupra did a lot of miles in the first 6 months, and was one of the first off the production line post WLTP changes, so I'm guessing that I will also be one of the first to get one serviced.

Mine has always been super smooth but I like this. I don't want to feel the gear changes,as long as it's accelerating rapidly I'm happy. I can tell when the gear changes by the revs and the exhaust note but I've never really felt anything before. Why would you want a gear change to be clunky?

I thought on a first service they only changed thw engine oil and filter? The DSG isn't due a service for at least 3 years normally.

The gear change was never clunky, but previously felt instantaneous in Cupra/Sport modes, and if down shifting a couple of gears using the paddles, you would have the throttle blips, and occasional exhaust pops - it is this characteristic that is no longer present.

Whilst the DSG wasn’t serviced (oil change), this doesn’t mean that the software has not been reset and/or upgraded to the latest version. Also, as the clutch plates wear, there is a requirement to adjust/recalibrate, which again is software based. This is standard practice in the automotive industry.

I don't think that VW Group dealers are honest enough to tell you exactly what if any S/W updates are available and what the true nature/intent of these changes are - and that is not right!

Oh, and another thing, as far as I know, any/all VW Group module S/W updates are invisible in as much as they or you can not check for which updates have been applied to any individual car, unless it is logged at VW Group Mothership what has been updated/changed, in general, is a mystery! There will be the very odd exception to that rule where a major update has knock on effects like associated wiring and hardware changes elsewhere in the car, but not normally.

I only know this as I had serious trouble with my older daughter's late 2009 Ibiza 1.4 16V SC - its incorrectly coded BCM was letting the battery drain, no amount of VW Group detailed diagnosing could detect that it was due to a known issue with BCM of that age - so the first SEAT main dealer just spent hours checking for faults and then for good measure replaced the steering angle sensor under the steering wheel, and said that was that - only the problem continued until unfortunately that SEAT main dealer closed down and I went to the next one, AC SEAT, they believed what I had been saying to the first one and requested info on any possible legacy S/W updates for the BCM, and SEAT Mothership supplied it and it was added to that car, problem solved for ever!

So, don't any VW Group main dealership workshop to be able to check your car for its current S/W update status by interrogating that car, it is either logged or not logged online, updates get applied to cars, they either confirm that they have been successfully downloaded into that module or not, as far as I know, the tech will never get a "already implemented" report from that car.

I thought the term/idea "fuzzy logic" is what is used here, so yes it should be adapting to the driver's driving and hopefully know from the key which driver is driving it so offer 2 driver profile settings.

My nan had a Golf go in afte that emissions scandal. It was a routine service but they fitted a load of different kit to the car and lowered the engine performance becasue of the emissions regulations. When she got it back it wasnt the same car. But they didnt tell her what it was until she complained.

I hope its not somehting similar here.

Had my 290 in for its 1st service last week. Cant say i notice anything different apart from being £120 lighter ( Lease provider doesn't require me to get robbed by the dealers hence the reasonable price)

Yes but if taking to an independent (assumption: non-dealer description), you are very unlikely to get a the latest software updates to control modules via VAS are you? Hence I wouldn’t expect it to be any different.

Most of the VAG specialists use VCDS/VCP. You can reset/calibrate the DSG mechatronic unit using these tools, but there are no software updates.

Value for money is subjective - you’ve paid £120 for an oil and filter change and had your infotainment reset; I’ve only paid a few pounds more for the dealer to service, and as I haven’t leased my car and want maximum resale for the car when I sell it, the delta between full dealer service vs independent service will easily be recovered at resale time (both in £ and time taken to shift) but is entirely dependant on individual circumstances.

The thing is that the dealers also do not update unless there is a certain problem reported. It's not like mobile phones or computers. VAG is more like "if it's not broken, don't fix it".

I appreciate this - I have 20+ years working in automotive/aerospace maintenance organisations. I noticed a difference pre/post service, and was wanting to know if mine was an isolated occurrence or if others were experiencing the same?

I totally agree the car wont have the latest updates. You must have a really cheap Seat Dealer as the Minor Service from my Dealer was £210, not just a few pounds more. As its a Lease vehicle I'm not going to pay for what I don't have to.

IMO i think a full dealer service history on run of the mill cars are overrated, these are not fancy cars with fancy engines etc. just normal cars with pumped up engines. At the end of the day I'm sure my oil was the same as yours. no doubt at some point in this cars life it will see a Seat Dealer and get all the necessary updates.

An Indy/Specialist generally has to keep a reputation by giving a good service.

Service was £165, but the dealers in the UK will generally price match the VAG specialist independents - I’ve done this with all of my recent VAG cars. I moved all over the UK with my job, so have a fairly good idea on geographic variation - believe it or not, London has some of the lowest prices; my friends and I would regularly book the cars in for a service with the London dealers and travel to central London for the day using public transport. When you consider that you get free parking whilst at the dealership, this offsets the cost too!

And yes, I resent paying for a job I could easily do myself; I dread the BS when they claim to have filled up my screen wash and change my sump plug, when everyone knows the screen wash was full to begin with and that the oil is sucked out of the car and not drained. I also get a video to tell me the tread depth of the tyres that had been replaced less than 24 hours before.
