Hi guys

I want to change my 2.0L 8v to a 2.0 16v. Can i do this? Are all the mountings for engine and gearbox still the same? I need to know before buying this 16v engine I have found. I know I need to change ECU etc, I just want to know first if any mountings need to be changed.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

all mounts are the same but gearbox isn't - you really need the box as well (along with shifter etc etc)

hmmmmmm so how much work is it to change the gearbox mounting? I want to do a turbo conversion so 16v is the way to go. Loose too much power on a U - FLOW head. Gas has to travel too far. Why would I need the shifter?

gearbox mounting is the same, the box itself isnt

you have a 020 box operated by rods

the 16V had a 02A box operated by cables

The 16V flywheel wont work with the 020 box you have

Hmmmmmmmm, this just gets more and more complicated. So would it be cheaper for me to just buy a 16v car complate?

you would also need to change your pedal box cos the 8v box has a cable clutch and the 16v has a hydraulic clutch. the best phrase i can come up with is "never build a car you can buy"!

16v is cable too - the TDI is hydraulic

saying that whilst it was all out i would do it anyway so you can use the hydraulic version - once the pedals + box are in the rest is an easy bolt in job with golf 3 bits

X flow 8v head was on the MK4 golf 2.0 GTi and the MK4 Ibiza 2.0 sport also.

I would avoid doing a swap to 16v in the same car, for many reasons and just trade the 8v for a 16v.

I would also have a good go in a 16v before getting one as the driving style is very different and after an 8v can feel quite rough.

The clutch should be hydraulic but some uncomprehendable reason they cable converted it and as a result its probably the worst thing about a 16v.

Having all that said when its all working perfectly there is nothing quite so fun and rewarding as a 16v at full chat!

I have been told the pistons are at an angle so cannot put a 16v head straight on. That was from a mechanic. Do you think he lost the plot? If anyone is sure the 16v head bolts straight on please lemme know. Oh what to do, what to do.............. I want to do a turbo or supercharged conversion later on guys, so I have to have a X-flow head.

I really would just sell your car and buy a valver if that is you're engine of choice. It will cost you more money any other way.
You could however keep your pennies and save to do a conversion to something like a 1.8T in the car you have now - then you have you're turbo too.
In the long run that would probably work out cheaper than changing to an ABF, and then wanting to get some forced induction at a later date

i thought i had an easy way to convert it back recently but it can be done just needs the tdi pedal box assy fitting in which i was trying to avoid at first

bits so far :
tdi pedal box assy c/w pedal
brake master reservoir - or better alternative seperate one
clutch master cylinder*
supply pipe assy*
clutch slave cylinder*

(*Golf 3 bits)

Isn't there a supercharge kit from the US. When I was looking into supercharging all I could find was 8v kits, etc.....

Just go for that or if you want a 16v you might as well go out and buy one they're cheap enough now!
