A Sad Day

A sad day ladies, Gentlemen and Aliens.

Today is the day another MK1 Leon is being taken to the graveyard in the sky. After being rear-ended by a tw@ in a transit (bit of good news, he's been sacked) my insurance company have deemed my car uneconomical to repair. My poor baby, after being in storage for 6 months and then being resurrected with a new battery and alternator as my daily was in the workshop, my Leon is no more. All ended in less than 1 minute. The transit slammed into me at 30mph whilst I was stationary waiting for a roundabout.

It's been a wonderful 2 years with this car and I've loved every minute of driving and modifying it.

I am upset, I have put a lot of time and money into my Cupra. But this is the risk we all take when modifying "old" cars. Now I need to get my daily back on the road 🙄

This is the worst. If you'd totaled it yourself, you'd hold your hands up and accept that you done f**ked up and that's just how it goes. When it's someone else who did this, it's a whole different story.

I don't suppose the insurance will cover another one? I can understand if you wouldn't want to though - with all the work I've done on mine just to keep it stock, I wouldn't be able to face doing it all over again, and on a car someone might have their fingerprints all over, who knows what would lurk beneath.

Unfortunately the insurance are just going to scrap it, I could buy it back but it would hold the write off classification, seeing as it's such an "old" car (from an insurance standpoint anyway) I wouldn't be able to sell it in the future as people are a bit cautious about write offs. And I've spent so much money on it I can't bring myself to even try and cough it back to life...I think as upsetting as it is I'll have to let him go in peace...and to think this was when I bought it a genuine unmolested 1 owner full service history car, that I rescued from storage in the first place, only had 90k on the clock 2-3 years ago. I had many plans for this car but thanks to someone not paying attention I'm going to get a small payout for all my hard work and the car is no more.

plenty of leons being sold or broke for mega cheap these days, get yourself another with a better starting base for continuing. that is if you still have the energy.

Old cars and dozy bastards can be a right insurance pain.
So usually I will do the cash vs dozy git's no claims bonus, blackmail route.
But a nice old car, vs insurance assessors, I feel your pain.

It looks an easy repair. Second hand boot lid and bumper. Yeah it will be classed as a write off. But being an older car the next person wouldnt really care.
But also if you take pics of the damage etc to show it was a write of due to being beyond economical repair. And that is normally set at 75% of value of the car. So. If its worth £1000 it only takes £750 to write it off. A new boot lid new bumper and all the parts your looking at well over 1k for it any way. And insurance won't fit pattern panels or second hand stuff.
My option would be buy it back and repair it and run it your self mate

Id argue it out with the insurance and get as much as possible for it. Then buy another one that hasnt been damage/repaired.

These are good ideas lads, but I have another car anyway and the Leon was just taking up space, it was in storage on my drive (under a cover and battery disconnected) for 6 months as I was originally selling it (due to previously aforementioned other car) but then my daily needed repairs so whilst that was off the road I was using the Leon. I couldn't sell the car due it's problems, all be it common Leon problems like door seals and locks it needed a fair bit of work, so I put it into storage to convert into an autotest car but then it got written off, seeing as my daily needs A LOT of money spending on it, it was just easy and cheaper to let insurance take it, and collect the insurance payout to help cover the cost of repairs on the other car. Plus I have a baby on the way in a few weeks and having three cars on a two car driveway would be a pain in the ass 😆 don't get me wrong I do seriously love Leon's and it breaks my heart to see it go but I honestly can't do anything with it and obvs noone would buy it.
