Hi everyone, could somebody help me out, I have a seat altea xl, its an automatic, previously I have had no problem with it, I drove to work absolutely fine, no warning signs or strange sounds, I parked up for the day, as I came to drive home it started up fine but as i pulled off it seemed to be slipping gears and revving high, I parked it up when I got home and rang the garage, they told me it could be low transmission oil, they quoted me £2000 to fix because they said its a cancelled unit and they would need to take th clutch out before they take the unit out to get to the gear box oil. Dos this sound rite

I would get a second opinion..... Could be low transmission oil but they don't usually use any unless there is an obvious leak. Can also be an issue with the electronics in the gearbox ('mechatronics') which can give the symptoms you describe as well. Any warning lights, flashing gearchange numbers? Is it Ok when cold and then starts to give problems after 5-10 mins? The electronics can be repaired by specialists if that is the problem, but may be worth getting a SEAT dealer or good independent who knows the gearbox system well to give it a check. The gearboxes are fairly robust units - how many miles and years and any past servicing??

Hi, thanks for getting back to me I appreciate it, yeah it is fine when starting from cold no problem, but after 5-10 min it does start to slip gears and then rev highly, the are no warning lights but gear flashing numbers do start when it slips gears and revs high, it is 80,000 miles approx its a 12 plate and hs a full service history from new, in fact I only got it serviced 3 weeks ago

80K miles is about right for problems if they are going to happen - my first one went at 85K and searching the forum (DSG or mechatronics) does seem to show a number of failures around this mileage - though it did seem more prevalent on older vehicles. Check the web for people who specialise in DSG or VW group auto gearboxes and can do the electronic repairs. Still not cheap though but a lot less than £2K and as far as I can remember no need to remove the gearbox but not a 5 minute job either!! May be worth talking to SEAT about a contribution if it has a full main dealer service history.......
