anyone know why my VAG-COM seems reluctant to talk to the air con computer when everything else seems OK, sometimes works if the fan control is swirched to OFF and also will go on strike after clearing a fault code

What kind of interface are you using?
What version of VAG-COM?

You might want to check the ground connections to the climate control system. Problems like you describe can be caused by dodgy grounds.

the interface is thro' the serial port -[....]- hope that's right, and using 311-2N edition. thanks for the reply, now I just have to find the earth points
