Are aftermarket speakers worth it?

I always just assumed that the stock speakers are kinda sucky. Recently I've seen this one user review talking about head units being at fault sometimes for the audio quality being poor and it got me thinking... Would it be worth it to spend ~160€ on two pairs of speakers while keeping my RNS310?

I'm open to the idea of upgrading the head unit as well though, just don't really feel like spending the money if I don't have to, haha. However, if you have suggestions for good ones that won't cost me an arm and a leg, I'd appreciate them!

Thanks in advance.

I've got the RNS315, so not sure how that compares in quality to the 310. I wanted speakers, but instead put a sub in the boot and turned off the little square speakers in the door. Made an amazing difference to sound quality as all the lows are now handled by the sub.

I have upgraded the stock speakers with some focal ones. The difference was big. After a while, the stock player was upgraded with a chinese navi. There was also a difference afterwards.
If you plan to upgrade the speakers, don't forget to buy some adaptive rings for them. If you don't, you'll not be able to fully lower the windows.

i "upgraded" from the basic red screen CD player (6J2035153?) to an RCD330 and sound quality is massively improved. kind of odd as i've had the basic one in since i bought the car so never knew there was anything wrong with it. i'd liken it to the first time watching HD TV, you don't know there is anything wrong with a picture until you see what it should look like.

This is a difficult thing to answer for you without some actual testing which would involve swapping parts out, it would be impossible to say whether there is an issue with the head unit or worn speakers.

Thank you for all your guys' responses!

I ended up biting the bullet and bought a Pioneer head unit along with the new speakers anyway.

I have installed the speakers so far and they sound great, even with my RNS310. My old ones sounded very muddy in the mids and had little to no bass. I bought the Hertz CX 165, if anybody is interested. I actually have bass now! Woohoo!

I do plan on switching out the head unit soon as well, though. Why not, at least I'll have the option to install a sub later on if I want to :D

Hello all, keeping an old thread alive. So I have decided to upgrade the sound in my car. Not sure whether to change or keep my rcd 310. but this is what I have bought and plan to install soon. I will let you know the results! At the minute I have only bought components for the front.

Alipine swe 815 8 inch sub £102
Hertz dsk 165.3 components £77
Noico sound deadening 36 sq ft £50

Local audio fitter wanted £600 for the above fitted. But I'm too poor for that so I've decided to do it myself 😂
