Finally got round to investigating why the 2005 FR Leon was running so badly, severe camshaft wear, sounded awful and drove like it was on 3 cylinders. As you can see 2 holed and 3 dished tappers. Also reckon lobs 1 and 8 must have worn away by 1/16th of an inch easy.

Anyway, new camshaft is in just need to torque it all up and reassemble. Only tools I had to get were the timing locking set. Not a particularly hard job although I bet some of the bots could be a bugger to sort if seized.

By way of an update, apart from a faulty cam bearing shell bolt (new) snapping off in the head the car is back together and sounding better than it ever has.

Took a few good cranks to push the oil into the tappets but fired up a treat.

After clearing up I measured the old cam lobs, from one that showed no sign of wear to lob 1 and 8, 4mm difference! No wonder it didn’t run right, amazed it ran at all.

With a bit of time and thought a job easily tackled if you’re OK with the spanner’s. Special tools for the timing £25 and did the job perfectly.
