I also managed to get hold of the same cable. The packaging card says iPod id3-tagging.

As with mp3 id3 tag, this contains cover art and details like album name, song name, genre, as well as a lot more. Using or having this cable does make it much easier to select songs by several categories like say any songs in a certain genre as coded in the tracks id3.

The added bonus is you can playback video stored (in my case) an iPod touch 4g. Nice. Once connected to the iPod media, choose selection and then videos. Then your video clip depending upon what it is.

Note I also saw 000 051 446 J mentioned on various websites which claim iPod-tagging for USA. I asked a supplier and the also confirmed it has a red/maroon coloured ring instead of the one that comes with the mk3 (blue)

I went for the A1 MMI cable (part number 4F0051510R) which Zboyd linked to, as it was almost half the price :D
I should hopefully get it tomorrow and will test with my iPod 5G Nano.
Fingers crossed it works, if not glad to see that the VW part number 000051446M definitely works so I will return my cable and buy that one instead :)

I finally had time to try out the A1 MMI cable and can confirm it works with my iPhone 4S, I get album art and can play videos too when the car is stationary.
It didn't work with my iPod though, I get iPod error. I thought I had an iPod nano 5g but having googled it looks like I have an iPod 4th Gen instead (they do look very similar! Lol) so maybe I have an iPod that's not compatible with the cable.
However glad that the red collar cable works for the iPhone! So another option for peeps considering purchasing a red collar cable :)

One of the two supplied leads will allow your android phone to connect to the port on the media unit. Works on my sgs3

These are the video supported devices
iPod nano 5G (version 1.0.2)
iPod touch 1G , 2G, 3G and 4G (version 3.0.0)
iPhone 1G , 3G, 3GS and 4G (version 3.0.0)
iPad (Version 4.2.1)

And these are the audio only supported devices (so will be a waste of time)
iPod mini (version 1.3.0)
iPod nano
iPod 4G (version 1.2.1 ), iPod Video 5G , iPod classic 6G
iPod touch
iPhone
iPad (Version 4.2.1)

Do you know if ipod classic 80gb supports video files? I really want to get one of these cables buto afraid of forking out a big price and for it not to work

I have ano ipod classic 6G and I'm afraid to go purchasing the 000 051 446 M
I know 4F0051510R doesn't support my generation it clearly states that but has anyone any info on the red Monday cable for this ipod
I'm seeing info saying only ipod supported are
Ipod Nano 5G Or higher with 30pin connector
Ipod Touch (all generations with 30pin connector)
Iphone (older generations pre Iphone 5 with 30pin

So I'm abit confused
