brake light fault, any ideas!?

i have an issue with the drivers side rear brake light on my 2004 tdi.

when not braking all my lights function correctly, however when i brake the drivers side tail / brake lights switches off, yet my front drivers side side light turns on.

while this is a very handy function for people standing at zebra crossings, im finding it a bit of a pain having everyone trying to pull me over to say my brake light is faultly!

if anyone has any solutions as to why this is happening and how i can fix it, it would be appreciated!

Have you checked the earth on the rear lights. Could be rusty or dirty.

jst had a very similar problem mate, check your brake light bulbs, id replace them just incase, then as you look into the boot, the left hand side where the little light is, just behind all the trim is the wiring for all your back lights and also the tube supplying the water to you rear screen washer, it is a common fault for this tube to leak as there is a little plastic elbow on it, so check thats not leaking and shorting something, also here is an earthing point (you will see various brown cables going to a bolt fixed to the inner quater) if these brown cables are loose this will cause a problem with your lighting, this is what caused my problem, i put a new bolt on it and made all connections secure, that sorted it!

hope this helps mate, sounds a bit much, but is really easy to do, took me 30mins, be careful taking your trim off, dont want it damaged.

problem solved. turns out the garage that completed my service put a dodgey bulb in. thanks for your help!
