Cam belt come adrift- whats to be done???

Hi guys.

i'm driving a 51 plate leon 1.9 tdi 110 and recently have been having a heap of issues.

Thursday just gone i was arriving at my usual rush hour queue when there was a cloud of white smoke from the cam belt side of the engine and a strong smell of burning. This cleared and i carried on.

Friday i left work to find my battery was flat as the fans had continued running for around 5 hours (discovered the fans come on as soon as the ignition is on - even when cold).

Today whilst investigating the fan issue i started the car and reversed around 2 meters to discover the steering was very heavy, then found the cam belt flapping in the wind. Pretty sure nothing terminal has happened - no bad noises anyway.

So now i obviously need to replace the cam belt. My first issue is that the engine has been spinning with no belt so everything must be assumed to be out of alignment. Second is what tooling i require .

Has anyone got any idea how to even start with any of this - i have no manual whatsoever so haven't a clue where to even start. Pretty sure there's no point to just sticking locking tools in there without ensuring everything is in the correct position first.

Help please..

Are you sure its the cam belt? The engine wouldnt run if you had thrown the cam belt. I take it you mean the auxillary drive belt that drives the pas pump, altenator etc. Check you haven't got a loose pulley and that they all run true. Possibly one of the ancillaries(like your pas pump for example) is about to fail and a pulley that isn''t running true (due to a worn bearing perhaps) has thrown the belt. Check the tensioner too.

Shows what i know. That'd help explain the burning smell and the smoke. Panic mode over. Has anyone got a diagram/drawing of where the belt runs so i can put a new one on? I was getting a lot of rattling from one of the tensioners so that'll contribute to what you're telling me. Is it simple to replace the belt and tension it?

I will still need to do the cam belt soothough as i know its near its life. Anyone got any ideas on the tooling for this?

might be worth changing the belt pulley too, my tdi 150 had the belt and pulley changed when the alternator was done, belt just for good measure but the pulley was clicking as I believe they're spring loaded

good help guys thanks. just checked the lowest pulley and found its a bit wobbly and won't move at all. I'm assuming this is the alternator (tho diagram above says a/c). I'm also assuming its a new alternator not just a new pulley.

Is T the tensioner? how do i operate this to get the new belt on then tension it up afterwards?

OK, just checked under the car and i assumed wrong. Going off the above diagram and what i've just seen it's the aircon pump. Does anyone know should this be free to move by hand? as i can't move it more than a few mm in either direction. The pulley is sheared on it, there appears to be only 1 tack weld kind of holding it.
Does anyone know where i can find a new one for less than £240 that i've been quoted and does anyone know if i can use a belt that bypasses the a/c??

ac pump has an electric clutched pulley so if the aircon is turned off it should freewheel and turn easily by hand

oh and yes T is tensioner pulley, Gen is the alternator, G is guide pulley, AC is aircon, PAS is Powersteering and CS is the crank pulley
