So returned the copy of the genuine one and got the armster. All fitted, takes about 10 mins. The bracket goes over the centre console and then four screws hold it in place. Looks neat enough fitted and doesn't look overly obvious. Finish of the arm is superb, good leather. Plastics are a close match as well as the leather with my LCR leather. Adjusts enough to make comfortable. Totally recommended. I also had a small problem with the finish on the bracket that goes over the centre console. Armster were more than helpful and sent me a replacement out...no quibbles. Very happy. If only I can get my cruise control retrofit working now!

I think i will end up getting an armster,i think with the mk4 golf 1 it is longer therefore gets in the way but with the armster the top slides forward so canbe slid back out the way of the handbrake :D
