changing thermostat

Has anyone been fortunate enough to figure out how you get the thermostat out.
theres no room at all to get to the bolts, the only way i can see to do it is take off the water pump, etc.

You can do it with a very skinny and deep 10mm socket

i could just about get a 10mm ring spanner on to the nuts, undoing them is another thing all together.

Theres a metal casting underneath that resticts movement an access.

Is it the power steer pump thats in the way. Comes off with 3 bolts.
