Condensation

Afternoon guys,

I hope everyone north of the border has survived the hurricane. Did anyone's cars get damaged?

Anyway, to the point I'm getting continuously pee'd off about condensation.

I've noticed when getting in the car in the morning, and even some times late afternoon that when I get in the car all of my windows are soaking on the inside. Having to keep a towel in the car with me to dry the windows before I set off.

Noticed one before when I didnt have the towel it took me about 15 minutes before the windscreen cleared.

Anyone notice this, and is there any way of stopping it from happening.

Happens on every car though, doesn't it?

Sorry to be so unhelpful, but you see loads of cars sat in car parks getting clammed up with condensation. I wouldn't say mine have been soaking though, is yours actually dripping off the window?

As in, leaving marks where drops have ran down.

Mibbe soaking was a bit of an exaggeration, the water doesnt run down the windows.

My old Polo used to do it but I was told to close the vents that go onto the windscreen and the ones that come out of the dash. switch them to the footwell vents and this seemed to work but it isnt working for the Ibiza.

I noticed the other day that my 2 month old ibiza took 30 minutes of driving to clear the remaining condesation from the outside of the windows even with blasting with the de-fog setting on the climate control. I thought that was a long time for a new car when nothing inside was wet (that I could see!)!! Though since that time it seems to have been OK.

In my old mk4 I'd started having a problem with condensation so I bought a big dehumidifier sachet, the type that you can hang in wardrobes and hung it from the back of the drivers seat. That worked well to dry the car out over a couple of weeks.

Try changing the cabin/pollen filter - blocked filter made a big difference on the mk4 ibiza.

No, I've never had a Ford or BMW do it. . .

One thing I do really, REALLY miss about my old mk4 Ford Fiesta Ghia X was the heated front screen.. bloody brilliant. In the ice, turn it on, scrape the side windows then just get in the car and use the wipers to clear the melted ice off the front and back screens. Why doesn't EVERY car have that!!

leaving the wet towel in the car will just make it worse.

Warm air can hold more moisture then cold air.
The windows are cold, the air gets cooled and its ability to hold moisture reduces (the air in a car is typically humid as you have been breathing there), so you get condensation.
Its natural, and its not really practical to totally cure it, however you can reduce it. Heaters on when driving? turn them off near to destination and give the air a clear out (windows down)
Increasing air circulation rather than reducing it would be my tip.
Not leaving wet items in the car,.
sadly carpets get wet from wet shoes or snow..

Apparently Ford have a patent on it hence they are the only manufacturer to offer quickclear, but yes very useful in this weather! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quickclear

Like other posters on this thread, I'm not entirely sure how you blast air onto the back windows.... As far as I can see there are no air vents anywhere close to the rear windows.

Do you mean using the round centre (or side vents) to direct air to the rear of the car? I have tried this before and it makes a small difference.

Can't say that the Ibiza is any better or worse for condensation than the VW Golf I had before it, or the MK4 Ibiza that went before that. However the MK3 Ibiza didn't seem to be as badly affected, though my memory is pants and it just may be that memories of badly fogged windows have faded through time! lol

I bet you're leaving the damp / wet towel in the car?

So you're not removing any damp from the car, just leaving it in there

Take it out, dry it & replace

Use the AC on max to do the windscreen & get the car warm to start drying it out - you've just got it wetter & wetter

That's interesting. I remember that on my old SAAB 96 which didn't even have a heated rear window it told you to put the heater on full defrost and move the sun visors down a little so as to direct the airflow along the roof to the back. The air went out at the base of the rear window. It used to work after a fashion, but then the heater was massive and it even had heat insulation in the roof.

I find the Ibiza no more prone to condensation than any other modern car I've had but the A/C on my previous Honda Civic probably cleared the windscreen condensation after a cold start on cold damp days quicker than the Ibiza. Don't know why though.

Wouldn't the patents have expired by now if they first used it 1985? It's odd - AFAIK no one else has it.

It's a good idea and one reason why I seriously considered a Fiesta but the better engine, heated seats, cruise control and more comfy seats etc. on the Ibiza swayed it in the end for me.
