Coolant warning has come on, pull over and there is virtually no coolant in the header tank. Dealership topped it up and sent me on my way. Get a mile down the road and it has come on again. Coolant level is below minimum level. Now waiting for the car to cool down so they can have a proper look at it. Car is a cupra r st, 16 months old and 9600miles. Got to be a leak somewhere i think.

Hello there,

oh that's not good then hope you get it fixed ASAP.
Yeah this could be anything but does sound like the coolant is leaking from somewhere. The SEAT main dealership should investigate your coolant leak, and possibly even fix it FOC if a part is found to be faulty, because your 3 year manufacturer's warranty is still valid, if your Leon is only 16 months old.

Hope you get it sorted.

I had the same on an Astra years ago..... turned out to be as simple as the cap seal on the header tank

They don't think their is a leak, these engines use coolant apparently.

Engines don’t use coolant - if the coolant level is dropping then it’s got to be going somewhere.

The most common causes of a drop in coolant level with the VAG 2.0 EA888 engine are faulty / leaking water pump or thermostat housing. Also, an air lock in the cooling system working its way out can cause the coolant level in the expansion tank to drop as coolant flows into the part of the cooling system previously occupied by the air lock. Air trapped in the cooling system when it’s filled in the factory isn’t uncommon - quite a few instances reported on various VW forums of the level dropping some months after the car has left the factory. Whether that would happen as late as 16 months / 9,600 miles after leaving the factory, I don’t know.

Are there any coolant odours or signs of leaking under the bonnet? Did the dealer pressure test the system when they were investigating? Have you checked you’ve not got coolant in your oil and oil in your coolant (hopefully, the dealer would‘ve checked for this) which would indicate a failed head gasket.

Coolant level slowly dropped in mine due to leak in thermostat housing.

Replaced under warranty only to leak substantially a month later - they had nipped the washer/seal when fitting the new thermostat causing a bigger leak!

All sorted now with no problems since.
