Heres the deal, i love my cordy, but i dont think it loves me. Whenever i am sat in traffic or turn the ignition on a really strong smell of petrol comes through the vents and can be smelt outside also. However when the air recirculation buttons pressed its all fine! Any ideas what it could be? Its actually making my girlfriend nautious (SP)

Cheers

sounds like a fuel leak

most common places are drivers bulkhead where the plastic pipes come from the floor to rubber to join the injector pack and tank return pipe (ones blue)

another is the pipe joint on the top of the tank (usually see a leak under the car) pop the rear seat up and unscrew the black disc (3 screws) and make sure all is dry underneath around all the pipes

id go for engine bay myself as recirc cuts off the air flow from that area

^ what he said, new hose and clips when it happened to me

only when cold usually as when it heats up it all evaporates

I've ruled out the top of the fuel tank for definate, everythings plugged in and bone dry under the rear seat. The smell does definately seem to be in the drivers side top corner of the engine bay. However i cant find any evidence of leaks. Ill give it another go tomorrow when the lights better.

Cheers!

is it definately petrol and not fumes? your oil breather pipe could be loose/backed up and you are getting the wafts from it.

Could also be a cracked manifold gasket. Letting in fumes to the car. Check full exhaust system.

I guess it could be that as its a similar area, but it gets noticeably worse when the fuel pumps primed.

Its the wrong kind of smell for exhaust fumes. The only other thing i have noticed is that the rocker cover gaskets leaking oil ever so slightly.

thats where the fuel pipes come up

take me off and make sure everything is as it should be (ie not crushed)

they dissapear into the chassis just below and wear inside the 1st 1/2 metre too

i would put money on it being the supply/return fuel hoses and clips

they go brittle with age/heat and seep when cold, start the car pop the hood and you will see the damp patch, it goes after about ten minutes
