hi,i have had a creaking noise since owning the car, which i was convinced was coming from somewhere behind the dash.it was worse on warm sunny days with air con on.it was driving me nuts.i took the glove box out,had a poke around, nothing untoward .anyway,my wife was sat in the passenger seat recently, and straight away pointed to the plastic covering behind the rear view mirror.it was that all .the windscreen must have been transmitting the sound.can't believe it was that all along.happy days (for now!).hope this might help anyone else who gets tormented by squeaks and rattles.

The source of unwanted noises in a car can be very deceptive, and I’ve found more often than not, they originate from somewhere completely different to where you think they’re coming from.

To track them down, it’s always best to have someone else in the car as a second pair of ears - as you found. They can also apply pressure to pieces of trim to help locate the unwanted noise source. Alternatively, they can drive while you attempt to find the source.

Anyway, glad you got it sorted.

I had a 2013 (63 plate) Mk3 pre-FL Leon. rattles and squeaks were from behind the instrument panel, passenger side A-pillar, driver's side front door, rear left (passenger side) suspension. Sorting one uncovered another one. By the time everything was sorted to my content, dealer did them all successfully over multiple visits, my time was up for my PCP, and had to return the car..

oh yes,i've had to do the front door rattles, and a pillar trim.at least most of them seem to be common ones,so fairly easy to find.what srgtd said though, rattles and squeaks can be very difficult to locate when stuck in the drivers seat.
