Cupra 290 - Noise when driving/braking

Morning all,

Just looking for a bit of advice!

My Cupra has developed a noise whilst driving, particularly around 40-50.
To me sounded like a bit of a flat spot on one of the tyres and on checking the front left did have a slight flat spot on.
Fronts were just about getting to 3mm so decided to get them changed at the weekend, tyre fitter checked and there was a flat spot so I thought great will solve it!

It hasn’t and i am still getting the same noise when driving almost like there is a flat spot, but now am getting the noise as well on braking again most noticeably around 40-50.
Normally would think that it could be something with the wheel bearings, but wouldn’t of thought an 18month old Cupra should be having issues with those?

Anyone any ideas before I try and get it booked in with Seat?!

Cheers in advance

Hi interesting that you mentioned the noise is around 40-50 mph, as have the same issue with my golf gti mk7.5 which has basically the same rear suspension set up as the Cupra, I will be checking my tyres tomorrow for the saw tooth as I had put it down to the noisy Bridgestones VW put on.

I noticed the rear noise grumbling having recently swapped from a facelift MK3 FR with torsion beam into the GTi with independent and thought it must be the tyres but...

I came across this really simple and cheap modification that’s been found on the golf forum that has reduced my road noise by a least 50%!! And as far as I understand will work on any MK3 Leon with independent rear except the 4x4 models please take a look see what you think :

Good luck.

on another note, my brother had a mk1 Orion 1.6i Ghia and a mk 2 1.6i and they were great cars found memories of both of them, I had the escort version but with twin Webber carbs ;),

That's really interesting, thanks for sharing.
On my way home the road surface goes slightly rough for around 100m and each time I drive over there I think - blimey! what a noise/drone - and it goes quite each time when I come the the end of the rough road surface.

You will find 'mass dampers' (harmonic dampers) all over the sub-frames/suspension/brakes/transmissions of 'premium' cars.
NVH is a really involved discipline and mass dampers really should be tuned to individual applications (changing the 'mass' of the mass of iron and stiffness of the bushings) as the body structure plays a role - even though these cars share the same underpinnings. It's also the development cost they are saving not just the piece price - however if it is cheap! worth a shot.

i was honestly sceptical that it would work but has definitely made a difference, the sub frame is basically the same on all the MQB platform with the independent rear suspension, just have a look for the pre- drilled holes i if they are there it will fit.

VAG designed it for the MK5 golf but currently it’s only fitted on the Audi A3 saloon - probably as seen as the premium and up against the BMW 3 series.

I walked in to my local Audi, ordered it and got it within 3 days, 10 minutes to fit and I’m no mechanic !!!

Cost wise about £60 so cheap !!

That's really interesting!! Can never understand why when its such a cheap part that they dont fit these in the first place!

Will see how it goes with getting the tracking done next week and then if still having noise issues i think i might look into this.
Car is a lease and may be having some changes at work in terms of having electric cars offered so i may have a choice to make in the next few months!

Cheers for all the help

I think that you are slightly wrong there, that Audi part is not, when considering it as an upgrade, not an expensive part, but when considering including it on a VW, SEAT or Skoda, it probably tips the scales for a "NO!". I bought a couple of small plastic wheel arch clips for my Audi S4 a month ago, that part is only used on Audis, they cost £18 each, which for what they were, in my world was serious money - but I didn't want to bodge that job up, so bought new ones, though it did sting a bit.
