Hi guys, is there a way to tell or a registration date/build date I need to know to determine if a Cupra R ST is GPF equipped.

I last looked to buy one new 14-18 months ago when alot of dealers had registered cars ahead of the GPF law changing. I assume those registered after were GPF equipped, muted and slower !!!

Any info on what to look for in order to obtain pre GPF appreciated.

There’s virtually no performance difference but the sound might be a little muted! Tbh four pots, especially the VW DSGs with their farty up shifts, sound anyway but just my opinion!

Cheers September 20
Became a requirement on all cars from September 2018.

I think that was all new developed cars. Existing cars had a longer window to retrofit them into the design.
I think any new car without GPF had to be sold/registered before September 2019. Hence dealers were keen with price to sell figures on the Cupra R ST immediately prior to this. Otherwise the law meant they had to register them and sell them as used.
I was actually offered cars new from 2 dealers cheaper than most used ones are today. But I was trying to be greedy and wanted one sub £30K.

Thinking through this again and remembering what happened in September 2019 has answered my own question.

So non GPF should be any 19 plate.

@xyz is correct - Sep 2018 was the introduction of the OPF/GPF.

The Cupra R ST has the OPF/GPF. This is why the ABT tuning box that was sold as a £500 option only delivers 350ps as opposed to the originally quoted 370ps.

The Carbon editions were built pre-OPF/GPF.

My standard Cupra ST was one of the first with the 300ps OPF/GPF 300 ps engines mated to a 7sp box; it was built as a MY19 model in Sep/Oct 18. I had to wait nearly 9 months due to the WLTP introduction delays.

This is why I’m hunting for a 2018 model RS3 saloon - it has a bit more noise than the September 2018 models!

Carbons didn't deliver the advertised 370

I thought that was why they didn't advertise the R with the same numbers?

Not quite, the ABT module sold in Europe for pre GPF 300's, are still quoted as 370, but in reality get more like 330-350 on a standard Dyno. This is what you could get from the dealer in Switzerland as they sold it as a Carbon 370. ABT Still claim it will produce 370 (PS) on the road.

Where as the Cupra Ateca, which came with the GPF from the start, only ever quoted 350 (PS). Which was why a quite a few people on here, including myself, said as soon as 370bhp was quoted by Seat UK, that it was wrong and would only be the 350 (PS) the Cupra Ateca got. Of course this was revised later.

The 350 module by ABT has been independently dyno'd with figures between 300 :O and 330 with nothing else changed.

That being said, unless you have the dyno's like ABT and Racingline, with the massive fans that can produce realistic airflow (Racingline pushed you back even when stood behind the car), you're never going to get the same numbers quoted by ABT, as the module is very conservative to protect the engine. That being said, someone else on here said after just one hard lap on a track day, they could feel the module starting to reduce power on their ABT R, so maybe its even more conservative on the GPF cars.
