can someone help me?

I'm after some info on the flywheel on my ibiza 20vt, it seems that it is responsible for my lumpy feeling when maneuvering at low revs

so can anyone enlighten me as to what the purpose of the DMF is and how it works

I have some ideas about damping but they are probably way off

Flywheel is connected to the engine and the clutch is connected to the gearbox! Engine and gearbox are obviously not connected.

When the clutch is engaged it bites with the engines flywheel and the drive is then transmitted from the engine to the gearbox and out to the wheels of your car.

A dual mass flywheel is there to dampen excessive vibrations when the 2 are connected. A single mass flywheel will be lighter but it will increase the vibrations.

Thats about all you really need to know in basic terms

thanks mate, I am an engineer and have a good understanding of how the drivetrain works, it was just the DMF that had me thinking

ok so it IS for damping vibrations then

at first I thought it was primary and secondary mass for low revs and primary mass only for high revs with some sort of viscose coupling but I see now that it is not a performance mod as such

well thanks for the info, I have read on here that the DMF has springs that can fail so I am assuming that the 2 masses are joint via springs

that certainly explains the lumpy engine when parking etc just on tick over and using clutch control (I drive a vauxhall cdti everyday for work) and can't get out of that habit

there are conversions for them as in std type flywheel and clutch

search about as theirs a few threads listing the options now

I agree. As I understand it, DM flywheels are engineered against a particular torque curve and other characteristics. Go tune the engine and your DM flywheel is no longer suited to your engine's new characteristics. There are good Single mass replacements on the market.

I've been advised not to swap out the DMF for a single mass one as it also acts as a buffer between the engine and gearbox to stop all that vibration screwing the gearbox up - ie its not just a refinement/comfort device. Can anyone else prove this to be wrong with high miles on mod'd cars with the single mass unit in ?

I would very much disagree with whoever told you this.

think about every car running with 02A g'boxes on single mass flywheels, like every corrado g60, VR6 golf, ABF 16v engined golf, seat etc etc etc - they all do many many 1000's of miles bog stock on this very same setup without such g'box issues as has been misreported to you.

The single mass flywheel is an OE fitment, which does 100K miles issue free.
