Engine temperature fault

Hi guys,

I’ve got a 2014 1.8tsi sports coupe. In the last 2 weeks it has gone into limp mode on a few occasions with the EPC light coming on. This stops if you turn the engine off and back on. And then on Sunday I went on a longer drive and the engine temperature shot up to around 115 after about 45 minutes of driving and then continued to fluctuate but mainly be too high. On the way back it rose again after around half an hour but went from 117 down to 82 and back up again. It’s really strange as the engine doesn’t appear to be over heating. Also it doesn’t go into limp mode or come up with any errors whilst this hot.

Anyone had something similar to this before?

Many thanks

You need to buy a basic OBDII dongle and install Carista or Torque on your phone and see if it's set any codes. These would give you an insight into where to start looking.

Hard to say for sure as you may have 2 issues that may/may not be linked.

Getting the Carista dongle and app might help. Your car should throw up some fault codes if the EPC light comes on.

As for the overheating - I had a similar issue with my 2014 184 TDI. The water pump had an electronic variable shroud on it that allows the car to heat up quicker by restricting water flow and then allows more water to flow when needed. This is known to stick and work ad hoc and can cause fluctuating temps. The newer water pumps have had this feature removed. I had mine changed recently and it has been spot on ever since (had the cam belt done at same time).

I did also have the thermostat and housing changed just to be sure but the water pump was deffo sticking.

I don't know if our vehicles share the same water pump but it might be likely.

None of my issues put me into limp mode though, which is why checking for fault codes would help.

Normal operating temperature is up to around 115deg from memory. The exact figure will be in the manual.

EPC light could be faulty turbo actuator.
You’ll need to scan and get the codes.

Thanks for the replies!

Plugged it in and it came up with a coolant temp sensor issue, so will get that replaced and see what happens.

Good man.

I think there might be 2 temp sensors as one is in the engine block. I had mine replaced as well as everything else and my mechanic said it was an *rse to get to!

Hope you get it sorted.

Update!

Had both engine temp sensors replaced and the computer said it was all good, the very next morning back into limp mode with the same issues, the garage has now noticed a small water leak in the electric water pump so that is now being replaced on Monday.

One thing I have noticed since all of this is that my wastegate noise is gone? does this mean the turbo is not spooling up to max because of the current engine issues?

Cheers

The car has been fixed, eventually!

I have had both water pumps replaced and that seems to have fixed the issue.

However my car isn’t driving like it used to, is it possible these issues have messed up the map? Seems to change gear very badly? Also as I said before the wastegate chatter has disappeared. Anyone got any ideas,

Thanks
