FR TDI Insurance for 21yr old?

Can anyone tell me if they around 21 and you've got an Ibiza FR tdi how much you're insurance is?

My step son has got a 1.2 S at the moment but he was hoping to change it just after his 21st birthday in a few weeks time, hoping his insurance would come down. Unfortunately he didn't have a very good start to his early driving years writing off 2 cars and now he's on his 7th car (with a bit of help from my along the way) and only driving the 1.2 Seat to try and build up some NCB. Really unfortunate for him though, he went into the back of someone recently which was a relatively slow speed knock as he thought the person in front was about to join the roundabout but didn't, so now he's lost the NCB that he built up using a 10 month accelerater.

Does anyone think it maybe possible to reasonably insure an FR at 21 with no NCB. I've looked in Glass's and it only puts the FR at group 8 insurance but with his recent claim and 2 others around 3 years ago I'm not sure if its going to cripple him on insurance, being a student.

Probably cripple me buying the FR for him anyway:headhurt:

I have a sport tdi 130 and i'm 21. There was very little difference between the sport 130 and fr 130 in terms of price. I have 1 fault claim from last march, 1year NCB

my insurance is about £600 with mods, so not too bad since i was paying £1400 on my old LCR

I really wished he hadn't had that recent bump. He actually paid for his own car to be repaired as it was just a little knock in his wing and he would have had to pay £500 excess which has didn't cost that much to repair. The car he hit though was a new shogun and his bill was £1000 plus insurance cost which he could afford to pay as well so he lost his NCB.

If he could get the premium on an FR for around £900 or less that wouldn't be too bad, but I don't think he will.

I'll try some online quotes and see roughly what they come out at before I even think of changing his car.

Why do you want to get him a car with ~2x the power and god knows how much more torque?

You say in your original post that he has written off 2 cars already, is on his 7th car and has just crashed into the back of someone while waiting to join a roundabout!!!!!
I'd wait until he can prove that he can drive a 1.2 without crashing for a year or so before moving up to something a little meatier......perhaps a 1.6 petrol or diesel that will have a lot more oomph than his 1.2.

I'd say his insurance would be much more that £1k - they are trying to make a profit.

If it was me, I'd keep him in the 1.2 and spend the money on getting him some advanced driving lessons.

I'm glad someone said something about getting something significantly more powerful considering his previous history. To be fair we have all been through the "Invincible" stage of driving, I was pretty much on a par with your son in terms of points and cars at that age. It took 2 years of driving a 1.0 106 (being overtaken by lorries going uphill aint fun!!) to realise that I didn't need to get where ever I was going in record time. It's like my old man said, "Nobodies going to give you a WRC contract at the end of your journey son". If it were me I would keep the 1.2 Ibiza for another year or two before handing over the keys to a quicker car. At the end of the day it's almost certainly going to be cheaper to run and certainly less offensive in the hands of a younger driver.

Lol after writing that I've realised I'm starting to sound like MY dad!!!!

When I got my first FR I was 20 with 2 claims and paid £1400 for 10 month with Bell. Next renewal I was 21 had 3 claims and 3 points and the price was the same so I'd say he's looking at well over a grand. I'm looking at just under £1000 this year now that 2 of my claims won't count.

All very good points but I make it sound worse than it is.

He started at 17 after he passed his test in a P reg 1.2 Clio (which he obtained 3 points for exceeding the speed limit on a motorway 50mph roadworks section) and to be fair he'd probably be still driving that if it wasn't for me being into cars. I got his mum a new car so he had his mums S Reg 1.6 Astra just after his 18th birthday. Someone else went into him on the motorway and wrote it off (not his fault). I then got him a 51 reg Saxo VTR which he turned upside down avoiding an animal on a country lane (his fault)
I then had to get him a car quickly which was a very old Fiesta, sold that after about 1 month. Then came a W reg 1.2 Clio, sold that after about 6 months. Then came an X Reg Corsa 1.4 SRi on his 19th birthday, sold that after about 12 months. His current 04 reg 1.2 Ibiza, he's had since June last year and he was really looking forward to getting something a bit quicker after his 21st birthday. He would have obtained 3 years (3 x 10 months accelerater) NCB in about July this year until he had a lapse of concentration and went into the back of someone.

I do feel for him as he was doing really well but he does have some bad luck and its not as though he can't handle a car as I've taken him on track days before and he is very competent and has got good road skills for his age with powerful cars. He has even beat one of the guys who runs supercars direct to second place on the podium in a karting grand prix.
