Hi guys new to the mk3 leon i have a 2014 leon fr 184 I've had 1 mk1 and 3 mk3 Leon's previously but just asking this I know the Mk3's have a slightly smaller tank than the mk2 about 5L less but it seems to me like there not great on fuel lol I'm only indicating about 80-90 to a ¼ tank and about 200 to ½ tank seems a bit crap lol and I'm getting 44mpg what are you all getting

From memory Mk3 petrol and diesel has 50 ltr tank (4x4 has a 55 ltr). Never found the fuel gauges on the MQB cars to be that accurate to be honest - (owned various Octavia, Leon, A3).

On the 184 ps Octavia, it would travel 70-80 miles before LEDs would drop to 7/8 full, and when 0 miles showing on range, invariably would only squeeze 44-46 ltrs into the tank.

You could recalibrate via VCDS, but never bothered getting around to it.

Smaller tanks = less weight, so better economy/emissions under test.

400-500 miles on a tank (184 ps Octavia Estate manual) was normal, and 500-600 miles on a tank (150 ps Leon 5dr hatch manual) was normal, so not too different to you, but so many parameters can alter economy so difficult to judge accurately. What I can say is I never achieved the 68 mpg claimed on the Octavia (60 ish was my best in Eco mode and driving very economically).

if you are using the fuel gauge to say you have half a tank, you will have LESS than half a tank. and the same with 1/4.
In my experience a tank only needs to be be 80-90% full to show as full on the gauge depending on the car (VAG will be nearer 80%)
in my mk 1 about 20% of the fuel needed to be used before the gauge would drop at all from 'full'.

in your example, if the tank is indeed 50 litres, and you have half a tank, that would be 25 litres, (5.5 gallons)
If you are achieving 44 mpg and have 5.5 gallons, you would get 242 miles to half a tank, not 200. This suggests that when the guage indicates half its actually leaving 20.7 litres, or 41.4% full. which is inline with my general experience that only 80% or so is needed to indicate a full tank.

stating how many miles you get per £20, or half a tank will not give you a real measurable mpg figures; you need to know miles and litres (or gallons)
so when the light comes on and you fill to half way how many litres are you putting in? i'd expect 20-21. so you clearly wont get half a tank worth of miles.

Based on 50 litre tank, (normally capacity is from full, down to when the light comes on) and 44mpg you are getting, this is the equivalent of 484 per tank.

does this sound better?

I have a 2.0 TDI ST 184. On the commute to work every day (4 miles of A roads, 7 miles of motorway) and travelling at decent pace, I get between 48 and 55 mpg there and back every day.
If I go on a longer drive (regularly travel to Milton Keynes using mostly motorways for 2.5 hours) and do between 70 mph - 80 mph (apart from speed restriction zones), I get between 55 and 60 mpg. Best I've had was 62mpg.
The car is unmodified and always run on branded fuel (Esso, BP etc, not supermarket fuel). Don't know if that makes a difference.

I always ran mine from full to empty. Usually did 500miles to a tank and then 46l to fill it. That's just under 50mpg.

Long term figure on the computer was 49mpg.

And I don't go chasing mpg figures.

What sort of driving are you doing? 44mpg around town or short journeys sounds about right as the engine isn't suited for it. Prolonged motorway journeys that does sound a bit low.

Probably a bit redundant quoting what I get as it's probably the perfect journey, straight on to the motorway at either end but I average around 65mpg. Managed 69.1mpg the other day but I was really trying and was ready to pull my hair out at the end. This is on a mapped car too.

Mmm - around town I get high 20's and on a longer run it goes up to mid 30's........
I'm happy though as it's better than the TVR at 20mpg!!!

I'm replying to this comment because the distance is in metric and therefore doesn't require the knowledge of ancient roman podiatry.

I get 950-1000km out of a tank, i have a 2016 ST FR 150bhp. 35 Minute commute with 25mins being on the motorway.

I have a 2014 184 ST FR and I also found the fuel tank and range less than my Mk1 Leon.

I never run it empty, so 450 miles is usually the most before I refil.

It usually gets 50-55mpg for `normal` driving. I drove it to Wales this morning, 200 miles on A50, M6, M56 etc doing 70-75mph max and got 64.8 mpg out of it. The car is chipped and I have noticed increased mpg since fitting it.

It is currently on it's 2nd tank of Tesco fuel but I do stick V-Power through it about every 3rd tank.
