How easy/hard is it to do a gearbox oil change on my cupra r 04 plate? Can I do it myself or do I need to take it to a garage? I know very little about cars

piece of piss mate,

Though I currently can't remember the specific tools you need to do it.

Drive the car around for a bit to get the oil warm
Jack the car up, just it on stands blah blah blah
Make sure the filler plug can be un-done
Undo the drain plug, put some rags down and a bowl to catch the oil (remember gearbox oil STINKS!)
Leave for about 10 mins to make sure all the old oil is out
Put the drain plug back in (dunno the torque setting?)
Get a funnel and a piece of hosepipe. stick the bose pipe in the filler hole, have the hose pipe up through the engine bay, stick the funnel on the top
Pour in the oil until it over flows slightly
give it a few minutes, top it up
pull the pipe out
the the filler plug back in (dunno the torque setting?)
Drop it back on the floor
Done.

Easy enough to access the drain plug if it's anything like my FR TDI (which has the 6-speed gearbox - 06M?).

Just that you need a large torx-type fitting to remove the plug. Why Seat didn't just use a large allen key is beyond me  Check on eBay for the right fitting. This one works for my car (but can get cheaper elsewhere ISTR).

I think the fill plug is the same fitting type, but harder to access - Buy gear oil in the bottles with an extending tube and it might help with refilling, or else gaffer tape a length of flexible plastic tubing to a funnel and fill from above the engine.

Might be worth changing to a suitable synthetic fluid - I found it improved the shift when cold on my car. Places like Opie Oils have a car-by-car fluids finder.

To get the correct level, maybe best to overfill slightly and then allow the excess to drain out of the fill plug when the car is lowered off the jack, as the level should just be up to the fill plug.

Oh and do this with gearbox warm, obviously.

ETA: Remove fill plug first - no point draining gearbox if the fill plug won't come out! Also it will stop airlocking while draining.

Thrown away the bottle now, but I think it was Fuchs Titan Syntofluid stuff last time, synthetic fluid - it was recommended on the Opie Oils website for the Leon as an upgrade to the basic gear oil.

Their website is currently down unfortunately so I can't check.

The car has to be level when filling the gearbox to get the correct level. No good just jacking up the front or you will just end up overfilling the gearbox
