Gearbox Service Advisory?

Northern Bloke

Had my Exeo 143CR ST serviced at the main agent a couple of weeks ago just prior to the expiry of the warranty.

There had been a groan/noise from what I thought was the power steering, but they checked it and there was no fault found.

They then suggested that it was something to do with the gearbox, and that there was a service advisory notice from Seat and that the car needed some remedial work.

It's been in today, they've changed the gearbox oil for some thicker/thinner stuff- and that's it.

I don't really get what/why this is/was an issue - anyone know?

Did it fix the issue? I'm getting the same problem (groaning from steering) but only when turning the wheel to the right.

Didn't fix it, noise is still there - it'll be going back next week.

Definately from the PAS/Pump

Thanks. Let me know what happens. Mine is booked in for next week for noisy steering and the stiffness of the gearbox (2nd gear is the worst).

I had a groan from my steering shortly after getting the car. (Bought it used with 3.5k on the clock).

Turned out to be low fluid level. Worse when the system is cold and it draws in air hence the noise when steering. The root cause of the problem however was a leaking steering rack, so they replaced the whole thing. I felt around the rear of the rack (NS) and it was wet with hydraulic fluid.

Worth a look?? Assuming its the same noise

Do you have any details on the gearbox advisory?

My car (ST170) has always been stiff to get into (primarily first) gear first thing in the morning and with just 6 weeks of warranty left, I'd like to get this seen to if possible!

thanks

Groan on lock with the steering is common, I am hoping that they have sorted the rack issue as leaking racks are common on b6 and b7 audis! My old b7 blew a seal and its £500+ for just the rack if you get a genuine one on trade! There are guides and threads on Audi-sport.net etc what to look for when the rack starts to go.

It would be good to I know the gearbox update too? Our car is only 6 months old and has different gearing to earlier cars, so maybe ours already has the new spec fluid?

ajuniper,

this might help.

Production change

Use of new oil in the manual gearbox (ML310-6s.) to improve the degree of efficiency and handling.

From 07.2010, chassis number VSS***3R*BR003300

Measure

Should the customer complain, once the problem has been confirmed the following repair procedure must be followed:

• Start the engine and run it for a few minutes putting it into each gear to heat up the gearbox oil and make it more fluid and easier to drain.

• Stop the engine and drain the oil from the manual (ML310-6s.), letting it all run out (approximately 2 hours - the longer the better).

• Fill the manual gearbox (ML310-6s.) with new oil with genuine part no.: G 055 532 A2, to the level indicated in the manual.

Hi Kev,

From 07.2010, chassis number VSS***3R*BR003300

Does this mean that only vehicles from 07.2010 are affected, or that they changed production on that date and it only affects vehicles prior to that date?

My car is a January 2010 car so I'm trying to work out if it would be affected or not?

thanks
Andy

Hi kev,

what exactly are the symptoms the customer should have complained of?

I logged a stiff gear shift with my dealer twice within the warranty period, requesting an oil change as this fixed it in my previous car... a Leon cupra. They said that they could find nothing wrong and if I wanted it done, I would have to pay.

Ive got a 59 plate ST.

kev

Hi Kev

My chassis number is VSSZZZ3RZAR0071xx. So presumably I can get the dealer to upgrade the oil for me?

thanks

My old 58 plate PD170 MK2 Leon had a stiff second gear when cold, My old 2011 CR170 Exeo had the same and my new 2012 CR170 MK2 Leon looks to be slightly stiff on cold mornings too.

I guess the thinner oil doesn't really work then?
