I've worked my way up from the bottom... apprentice mechanical engineer, £55 per week, first car bought with a loan from the folks (10 year old Nissan Micra!).

Nearly 10 years on, got a decent £35k job, got my own house, learned to look after my money... got savings schemes with work, cash ISA, share incentive plans plus other savings accounts.

Although I had the cash to buy my Leon FR back in April, Seat were offering 0% finance on the petrol model (as well as the Motorsport track day package). Makes sence to take advantage of that, keep your cash growing at 5+% in savings or whatever.

I went for the FR cos it seemed like the sensible thing to do, got a good deal, 0% finance etc. but in all honesty, I was gutted that I didn't go for the LCR... Spent loads of time & money on wheels, bumpers, exhaust, interior etc. trying to make an LCR look-a-like... but at the end of the day, it still wasn't the real thing... and insurance went thru the roof cos it was "modified".

So, after only 5 months of having the FR, I went and traded it for an LCR. I do have a small amount of finance on it, but I have no intention keeping the finance for the full term... as and when I work overtime, I'll be putting the extra money aside & I'll be paying it off ASAP.

As a previous customer with VW Finance (0% was with them) I had a preferential fixed rate of 3%, and there is no charge for early settlement.

I had a loan from the bank of M & D to buy my first car ( brand new , white, 4 speed Peugeot 106 with denim seats! ). Within a year of that I got a promotion and was driving round in a brand new 106 Rallye. Now living very comfortably with mortgage and a LCR 225, paid for with a 10k bank loan ( now half paid off ) . Will probably keep the LCR another year until the new Leon Cupra comes out and get a new one ( specced with DSG ), again with a bank loan. Will keep that for 2 years then get a new car ....blah blah blah ;)

Not really, I've had a Leon Cupra R loved it to bits.
I've now got a wife, house and two kids.
And I wouldn't swap back.

The first time you see your first child being born it puts things into stark contrast. You say to yourself " whatever he needs he'll have " Cars fade into insignificance.

I CAN easily afford a NEW Cupra R but I chose not to because it IS just a car Beautiful I grant you. But in five years it will be old and out dated where as my boys will have given me something new almost every day. Not always good ,but new all the same.

Now the wifes at work and the kids are in full time school I can spend more money on my first and true love.

Suzukis finest GSXR 750 K4 (Blue and white of course there faster)

I mean come on, can you run a Cupra R, with a mortgage, kid AND WIFE(most expensive bit!!) and still have spare cash? If you can fair play, i wouldnt be able to.

NO! That's why I drive an LC. It's a compromise compared to an LCR but it's still good value for a reliable, fun car that's more than quick enough for every day use.
However much you earn outgoings always rise to eat up or usually exceed the income. So if anyone can sub me 10K for the Inland Revenue by the end of the month........... ;)

I would REALLY think hard about going into too much debt for a car. It is nice but 5 years is a long time. DON'T do the credit card thing swapping from one card to another to take advantage of the 0% screws your credit rating up so when it's time for a mortgage your limited to the lenders that will give you one.

Talking from experience here buddy wouldn't like you to make the mistakes I have. I got caught up in this whole " Status symbol " thing early on. I HAD to have the 4 bed house,LCR ,holidays in Disneyland. I'm 33 now and I'm only just out of serious debt Got the mortgage on a smaller house and thats it. plenty of £££'s to spend and thats how I like it

I now live by "if I can pay for it . I can't have it "

I'm not saying don't buy the car . Just be very carefull and don't get caught up in the debt spiral like I did ;)

Expecting my first child soon and your're right, cars go out the door.
With a new house being built as well I'm sticking with my 03 cupra for some years to come :)

Maybe it's me but are you gunning for it?

Sod the LCR? This is a Leon forum, remember. I can't afford a Porsche 911. Shall I go on their forums and tell them what they could/should have bought instead?

Rant over.

'acceptable' debt does seem the norm these days, people don't bat an eyelid to credit cards and loans these days, i have one credit card and i only got it due to having insurance on large expensive purchases but when the bill came it said i only had to pay a minimum payment and the offer was 0% on purchases and transfers for i think 6 months so i've been paying it off at 0% for 3 - 4 years now - just swapping at the end of the % offer, i think it was to buy the kitchen or bathroom anyway the thing was the money/cash was there to buy the thing! so i just slapped the cash in my ISA and at least it's working for me getting me 5%.

at the end of the day chaps we all different with different views on how we finance and budget for things.......sure no-one wants to get crazy in debt, but you must remember life is for living and if you want it, go for it! at least at the end of the day when you are old, grey and knackered you said you lived.......

Exactly, you may be run over by a LCR tomorrow so s0d it, that was my rational for getting into more debt with the TIV. If I need to I can always sell it again so may as well enjoy it while I can!

I sell my body on the street. Unfortunately this has not gone as well as I had hoped, which is why I'm driving a SEAT and not a McLaren F1 ...

Just because your children are the only thing you have in your life it doesn't give you the right to come on here and preach to its younger members on how they can afford their cars. FFS your only 32 and think you've been there and done it all
