for a long time now (in fact i cant remember a time when it didn't do it) i get a clunking when accelerating in lower gears. it doesn't happen so much when travelling at speed, but pulling out of junctions or changing from 1st to 2nd or 2nd to 3rd it does. (or perhaps its not as noticeable)

for instance say i pull away in 1st up to 20mph then let off the throttle it will clunk when i first pulled off and again when i let off. There are also strange noises that i cant really describe. Also there feels like a vibration not only through the pedal but under the floor in the foot well too.

also it doesn't happen every time, perhaps if I'm careful and smooth on the throttle and the clutch it won't make a sound at all.

there was a time when i thought it was the EDL functioning, then thought maybe it was the DP knocking on something. then i went to engine mounts, but i can find no play at all.

i had my passenger side outer cv replaced after it snapped a few months after i purchased the car. i'm wondering now what if its the inner cv causing the clunking sounds. only problem is how to diagnose this.

any comments, experience or advice on this? this really is the only annoying thing with my car, however it does drive fine, infact its never been better.

cheers

well i did consider that but from my experience the outer would give a grinding sound when turning corners. but i've had no such issue literally just the clunking

could a Mod move this to the main mk3 section? didnt realise i put it in this section

sounds like engine mounts, very hard to find play in them unless they are totally ****ed

slightly bent or twisted chaft can also cause this had it many times before best to get it in the air on a ramp and visually check it..
and if your going to get an Rx7 check the motor start from stone cold if and when you get it,, ive change loads of these before dur to buggerd apex seals/ lack of compression and cost alot to change
even the new rx 8 lump which they said would be ok is starting to cause hassle

hmmm don't really know what to approach first

if it comes down to eliminating possible causes mounts would be the cheapest parts to start with, its just i havent had any other symptoms to suggest they are fubar. dash aint vibrating and theres no engine movement noticeable.

and googl'ing inner cv problems really sound similar

It's not your ARB bushes is it.

Just sounds very similar to mine when I had that problem i.e put your foot down and it clunks once, then under braking it'll clunk again.

Check for any rub marks on the ARB. It was quite obvious on mine where it had been rubbing.

Could be a cv joint, is there much play in the joint? Can you see black grease everywhere?

My inner cv destroyed itself on the way to work this morning. Wasnt a nice noise followed by the car trying to drive by the cv boot only!!! Picked the car up later, chucked it on the ramp and found the inside of the joint in lots of pieces. Has this happened to anyone else?

The arb bush movement should only be over bumps and braking and pulling away.

Is your gearbox oil level correct?

much play....not at the wheels if thats what you mean, no grease been chucked over my wheels and i checked the gearbox side gaiter and that was fine no noticeable splits, tried wiggling the drive shaft too and it wouldn't budge, all bolts in place. haven't been able to check the other shaft

dont know how to check gear box fluid level, but had my clutch replaced last summer and the fella checked it then while the box was off, no leaks so assume its fine

I've had those symptoms twice. First time it was the lower arm that had worked loose. Second time the front engine mount was totally fubar'd!
Got a small problem of my own where I get quite a lot of vibration (Dash and through the floor) when any speed over 50mph getting worse the quicker I go..
