On Amazon you can buy 2 inch thick round rubber pucks with a slot in them. I jack the car up, place one of the pucks on each of the reinforced sill points (they're pretty obvious) and place jack stands under them. Completely protects the reinforced sill point from any damage.

Echo what someone else has said. If your not sure about jacking a car it isn't worth saving the 50 quid on an oil change

If you want to continue get a golf mk4 Haynes manual it will cover the basics nicely.

Or buy ramps something like race ramps. Unless you need wheels off it makes it so much easier to drive up on them and get straight to work.

Don't forget to chock the wheels you aren't jacking up.

Leaving a wheel laying under the sill of a jacked up car also gives you a safety net.

I just mashed the standard points as they were already bad, and I put axle stands on the solid nut of the wishbones or sub frame
