LC diesel a good buy?

I'm looking to change my MG  for something more economical, and after some web browsing the Cupra TDi looks like it could be a good contender.

I looked at a Leon (Cupra R) before, after I sold my Coupe, but opted for the MG.

However, after many years of fun and not much economy I trying to tell myself to look for something a bit cheaper to run.

I love the look of the LCR, but I don't think that will be much different to run than the ZS180!

I know there are a few Cupra diesels around with the nice LCR front on, so that would be what I'm looking for.

Used of course, to fit in with mu budget, unless there are some outstanding deals on old-shape Leons now the new one has been our for a while?

Also, whats the *real* MPG on these? I'm not very erm, light-footed :)

Cheers!

Thanks Mork, I was just looking on there anyway, the FIAT side of Motorvogue also have a 1.9 Grande Punto Sporting, which I am also considering - so I can look at both in one trip :)

real life mpg is very good, especially on longer run. I live in scotland and drove to just north of london and back again an averaged 61.5mpg!!!!!obviously that was pretty much all motorway driving but on mixed driving day to day i never really see less than 52mpg, and thats without being too creful with my right foot!!:D
hope this helps.

That sounds good Alex, I was wondering what the Leon would be like on longer journeys, one of the things that I'm not sure about with the Punto is whether it would be a pita (literally!) on long journeys.

Think about how much money you'd lose selling your current car for a diesel. It takes quite a bit of saved economy to recoup those costs.

We do a lot of miles, the Signum is also a diesel, but only does about 33mpg (3.0 V6). I don't use the MG so much, but if I had something more economical then I would use that in the week, then the Signum for longer trips and the weekend and holidays.

The Signum is a fantastic car, handles and performs well - surprises a few people ;) So please no one suggest we get rid of both cars for a Leon ;), plus sometimes we both need to use a car on the same day.

I drove from Near Lincoln to Feltham (surrey) and did about 46mpg.... Saying that - there was 2 hours of stop-start on the M25 to contend with.

I average 45mpg as a rule and I'm a little lead-footed - Being light footed will return 50odd mpg as long as I don't do more than 75.... (Y' honour).

I did have a 1.9 jtd punto (Y Reg) and that was quick too and even returned an average of 51mpg - I've even got the charts to prove it.

Yes, I'm that sad.

I drive thru' town to / from work and although it's not rush hour it's stop / start all the way, average about 48mpg according to the clock.

I got the Leon just for that, had a 306GTi-6 before that and avaraged about 23-24MPG!

Long runs should see you average over 50MPG so pretty good if you ask me.
