Got back to my car tonight and you guessed it. My worst nightmare, no car keys in my pocket. Locked out and stuck and no clue where they are .

Eventually got home and got the spare and got it going.

Anyway having gone through the various threads looks like a £180 dealer job or a risk with various bits and pieces from ebay which may or may not work.

As an alternative has anyone heard whether Timpson the key cutting place are any good. They claims to be able to sort keys with transponders

Any other options more than welcome!

cheers

I got mine done at a place in Coventry. They needed the spare key and the car, but they did the whole shebang in about half an hour for £65 I think? That was for a bog standard transponder key. A remote alarm key would have been just short of £100, and a flip key just short of £150 if I remember rightly?

They need the car to program the key to the car, and it really is an all-in-one job. To me it was a very good alternative to the extortionate dealer price. Oh yeah, and the dealer wanted a six week lead time to get the key, based on my chassis number and proof of ownership. I would then need to visit again to get it coded to the car. That is what I call shoddy service, especially when you pay so much.

That sounds encouraging. If I can get out of this one and get a new remote key for £100 i'd bite someone's hand off!

i know timpson do this service but i think youll find it is expensive your best bet is to go in and try getting a quote from them, and also getting a quote from the dealers then go to the cheapest.

What kind of company was this?

I posted this in the last thread that asked about keys, it's got most of the info required to "create" a whole new key!:

Well when I looked it priced up like this:

Replacement Fob (EBay) ~£30
  • I watched quite a few on ebay go for this price - just double check they come with internals
  • I know when I was planning on doing this on my Mk3 Ibiza Cupra people said both 434MHz and 433MHz transmitters worked regardless, but I can't confirm! It's meant to be written on the side of the fob, but I know it isn't on my Leon.

New Transponder £3.50
  • If you buy a fob without a transponder you can buy a new one here (Hickleys) for SEAT it's AKTP (some have bought AKTP2 specifically)
  • If it came with an old transponder you can add this to your cars "Safe-Key List" with Vag-Tacho (See Below)

Vag-Tacho (Ebay) £30
  • To programme/re-programme a transponder (Well add it's frequency to you "Safe-Key" list you'll need Vag-Tacho

Blank Blade £7-10
  • If your fob comes with an old blade you need one cut - The guy above will sell and cut the blade for £7 to a digital photo (suggest having it delivered to a far-a-way uncle or something!)

So in total about £70-75 for a whole new programmed key? Whether it's worth paying an extra £30-£50 to get SEAT to do it and save you any hassle is another story!

================

P.S. I may add if you found your spare key an could dig out the transponder all you would need to buy is the new fob + Blade so total = £37!

[EDIT]
P.S. - just realised the EBay links may be out of date - but it gives you the idea!

It was an independent key cutters, it wasn't specifically a car place but it did all sorts of key stuff. They just took the car round the back of the shop, walked out with a laptop and sorted it.

Thats awesome, may start popping into a few places and get some prices.
