Hello,

I am looking to by a Mark 3 Cupra R. It has done 102K miles but has had the turbo replaced at 60K along with cam belt.

It is chipped running approx 225bhp. Im not sure when it was done, possible around 50K.

Both front wheel bearings have been replaced.

I believe the IC has been replaced.

Breaks are good.

Exhaust is after market and has race cats.

It has spent all its life go up and down motor ways.

My question is what should I expect to break need replacing any time soon?

It will be my girl friends car so should get driven sensible most of the time.

I have seen a few high milers on this site, but what is a chipped engine good for, any one have a clue? How often/many miles does the turbo need replacing?

It also has had regular oil changes so good news there.

Ideally I want another 25K out of it before I look at engines or a replacement.

It runs and sounds sweet btw.

Thanks.

Mike.

Family owned from new, not all documented but im fairly confident it will have been looked after well.

Defiantly regular oil changes.

You'll never be able to notice everything about a car when going to buy or look. If it seems genuine to you then go for it. 100k is'nt that much mileage, if its mechanicaly sound then go for it. At that kind of mileage valve/exhaust clearences etc can tend to come out of tune a bit - 225 BHP wont put that much strain on the engine either.

Hope that helps

I thought it sounded sound, i have a 98 540 with 120K on the clock and that feels and goes so well. From my research i knew they were strong engines, same as the s3 i guess? and the s3 in its standard build is 210 anyway i think.

Who is with me in saying that these days milage isnt a biggy, like in the old days when cars were made of wood and coal!!

well, our cuppy has just knocked on to 102k, and its absoloutely tight as a drum, feels as good if not better than some of the lower miled ones i'd looked at, it's also been mapped, exhaust etc, so i'd have no worries in saying go for it...

yep i woud tend to agree, people are too held up over the 100k on a car, over the 100k the value seems to go drown quite a bit when really it doesnt matter so much in modern cars (engine wise) obviously all the other components are wearing too.

Its a bit of an old trick to buy a car with higher mileage as the value is low and you still get a high specced car for good monety thats usually good for another 50-100k.

i know somebody with 120k and he is going for a gt28 conversion, it seems to be, if they are properly cooled/warmed up and treated, then they do very well.

I saw a 1.8T golf on ebay once, that had 300k miles on, and his clutch only went at 120k! very impressive. Once reason why im not being stingy on mileage anymore!

That leads me to the next question, what do we think the estimated value of a 102 with partial history and sensible mods would be? Black 2001 Y cupra R. When, once im finished it will be mint internally and externally.

i doubt that anything will go that doesnt already go at 50k, aslong as the cambelt has been done, new waterpump while they were at it? and clutch perhaps

anything else will prob be basic crap that break no matter what miles are on the clock

least its a haggling issue that u can use to get the price down, would suspect it be pretty cheap at that number
